DEM models using direct and indirect shape descriptions for Toyoura sand along monotonous loading paths

T. Mohamed et al.

Summary: Two different DEM models were proposed to quantitatively simulate the macroscopic response of Toyoura sand under various loading conditions. The first model used spherical particles with additional rolling resistance stiffness, while the second model used 3D polyhedrons defined from 2D micrographs of Toyoura particles. Both models were calibrated using triaxial compression tests, showing similar predictive abilities but the polyhedral approach was easier to calibrate and offered a more precise description of particle shapes and initial fabric anisotropy.

CLUMP: A Code Library to generate Universal Multi-sphere Particles

Vasileios Angelidakis et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the role of particle shape in the mechanical and rheological behavior of particulate and granular materials. It introduces a unified framework for generating clumps or clusters to approximate particle morphology, along with a novel generation technique. The effects of clump-generation techniques on granular assemblies' mechanical behavior are investigated through triaxial compression tests.

Precision and computational costs of Level Set-Discrete Element Method (LS-DEM) with respect to DEM

J. Duriez et al.

Summary: The LS-DEM method extends DEM for arbitrary grain shapes by storing distance-to-surface values on a grid and considering boundary nodes, affecting precision and computational costs. For triaxial compression of spherical particles, LS-DEM requires smaller grid spacing and more boundary nodes to approach reference results, resulting in a significant increase in computational costs. Simple OpenMP parallel simulations can reduce the time cost increase in LS-DEM.
