Analysis of long term water quality variations driven by multiple factors in a typical basin of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region combined with neural networks

Zhaohui Feng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the impacts on water quality from various driving factors including land use, landscape, social economy and climate in a typical basin of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region. Several neural network methods and statistical analyses were used to analyze the relationships between water quality and landscape indices as well as socioeconomic factors. The results showed that different land uses had different impacts on water quality, and both agricultural activities and urban development had significant effects on water environment.

Assessing the effectiveness of potential best management practices for science-informed decision support at the watershed scale: The case of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon, Spain

Adrian Lopez-Ballesteros et al.

Summary: Coastal lagoons, such as the Mar Menor in Spain, are highly vulnerable to pollution from human activities. This study used the SWAT model to analyze potential solutions for the environmental degradation of the Mar Menor lagoon. The combination of best management practices, including vegetative filter strips and contour farming, showed the most effective results in reducing nutrient and sediment loads.

Analysis of water quality indexes and their relationships with vegetation using self-organizing map and geographically and temporally weighted regression

Zhaohui Feng et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between vegetation cover and water quality indexes in the Liaohe River Basin using self-organizing map and geographically and temporally weighted regression. The results show that natural vegetation can improve water quality to some extent, but its effectiveness is limited in heavily polluted areas.

Research on the Non-Point Source Pollution Characteristics of Important Drinking Water Sources

Lei Hou et al.

Summary: The contamination of freshwater resources by non-point source pollution has become a significant issue in China. This study investigates the pollution sources and characteristics of non-point source total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the Huangqian Reservoir watershed. The results show that the main sources of pollution are rural life and farmland, and the pollution is primarily concentrated in the water source protection area of the reservoir. The study suggests that controlling rural domestic sewage and waste is more effective than agricultural fertilizer control in improving water quality.

Uncertainty Evaluation of Best Management Practice Effectiveness Based on the AnnAGNPS Model

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uncertainty of best management practice (BMP) effectiveness in reducing total nitrogen (TN) load, and finds that the uncertainty of BMP effectiveness is greater than the uncertainty of TN load simulation. BMP effectiveness tends to be higher in summer and has lower uncertainty. The parallel terrace is identified as the most effective measure.

Impact of BMPs on water quality: a case study in Big Sunflower River watershed, Mississippi

Avay Risal et al.

Summary: The impact of Best Management Practices (BMPs) on hydrology and water quality was evaluated using the SWAT and HSPF models in the Big Sunflower River Watershed. Both models showed good performance in simulating streamflow, sediment, and nutrient concentrations, with differences in accuracy for specific parameters. The study highlighted the effectiveness of vegetative filter strip (VFS) and tailwater recovery pond (TRP) BMPs in reducing sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations in the watershed.

Assessment of toxicity and potential health risk from persistent pesticides and heavy metals along the Delhi stretch of river Yamuna

Musarrat Parween et al.

Summary: The study aimed at evaluating the environmental quality of the most polluted stretch of river Yamuna in Delhi, focusing on the presence of harmful substances in sediment and vegetable samples, and assessing the ecological and dietary health risks posed to the local population. The results indicated significant contamination of sediments with heavy metals, with some metals reaching levels of high concern, and high translocation factors in vegetables, suggesting bioaccumulation and potential health risks to consumers.

Microplastics in inland freshwater environments with different regional functions: A case study on the Chengdu Plain

Xintong Li et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution in the Minjiang River flowing through the Chengdu Plain was found to be serious, with varying abundances in water and sediments. Areas with high population and intense human activity tended to have higher levels of microplastic pollution, with larger-sized and fiber-like shapes. Densely populated urban areas were identified as sources of urban microplastics, while agricultural microplastics were associated with areas with large construction and high human activity intensity.

Spatial distributions of nitrogen and phosphorus losses in a basin and responses to best management practices - Jialing River Basin case study

Xiaoning Hou et al.

Summary: The study traced the distribution and sources of pollutants in the Jialing River Basin, finding industrial point sources to be the main contributor to N, while cultivated land had the most severe P pollution. In practice, implementing woodland filter belts and controlling fertilization proved to be the most effective in reducing N and P losses.
