Changes to virus taxonomy and the ICTV Statutes ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (2023)

Francisco Murilo Zerbini et al.

Summary: This article reports on changes to virus taxonomy and nomenclature approved by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) in April 2023. All ICTV members were invited to vote on 174 taxonomic proposals and a revision of the ICTV Statutes that had been approved by the ICTV Executive Committee in July 2022. Majority approval was obtained for all proposals and the revised ICTV Statutes. A significant change was the renaming of existing species according to the binomial format and the classification of gene transfer agents (GTAs) as viriforms. In total, one class, seven orders, 31 families, 214 genera, and 858 species were created.

Summary: A new virus affecting aquatic turtles in Florida has been discovered, causing neurological symptoms, oral and genital ulcers, and bacterial infections. The virus was isolated and its genome was sequenced, revealing similarities to arenaviruses. Phylogenetic analysis shows that its RNA polymerase gene is highly divergent from known negative-sense RNA viruses, while the glycoprotein precursor gene is closely related to hantaviruses in fish. This turtle virus may represent a new taxon of negative-sense RNA viruses, possibly at the family, order, or class level. Molecular and Biological Characterization of the First Mymonavirus Identified in Fusarium oxysporum

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: We identified and characterized a mycovirus named Fusarium oxysporum mymonavirus 1 (FoMyV1) from the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum. The genome of FoMyV1 has a length of 10,114 nucleotides and contains five non-overlapping open reading frames (ORFs). The largest ORF encodes a polypeptide with high amino acid identity to other mymonaviruses and also shares similarity with proteins of mynonaviruses that infect other phytopathogenic fungi. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that FoMyV1 belongs to the genus Hubramonavirus in the family Mymonaviridae. FoMyV1 can be transmitted through hyphal anastomosis and affects the growth and conidium production of its fungal host.
