Torus-like Solutions for the Landau-de Gennes Model. Part I: The Lyuksyutov Regime

Federico Dipasquale et al.

Summary: In this study, the global minimizers of a continuum Landau-de Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals in three-dimensional domains under Dirichlet boundary conditions are investigated. The nontrivial topology of the biaxiality sets of minimizers is established in a specific parameter range, known as the Lyuksyutov regime. The results provide insights into the regularity and behavior of minimizers, particularly in relation to isotropic melting and the stability of equilibrium configurations.

The Saturn Ring Effect in Nematic Liquid Crystals with External Field: Effective Energy and Hysteresis

Francois Alouges et al.

Summary: In this work, the Landau-de Gennes model for liquid crystals with an external magnetic field is considered to model the Saturn ring effect under the assumption of rotational equivariance. By rescaling the energy and deriving a variational limit, precise estimates around singularities and the study of a radial auxiliary problem were conducted. The analysis explains the transition between dipole and Saturn ring configurations and the occurrence of a hysteresis phenomenon, providing a rigorous explanation of previous simulations.
