Impact of thermal cooking processes on organochlorine pesticide residues (OCPs) in the edible green seaweed, Ulva lactuca, and associated human health risk assessment

Shanmugam Sundhar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of boiling, steaming, and microwave cooking on the reduction of organochlorine pesticide (OCP) levels in edible green seaweed. The results showed that thermal cooking processes significantly influenced the OCP residue concentration in the seaweed. Boiling, microwaving, and steam cooking reduced the OCP residue levels compared to raw seaweed. Therefore, different thermal cooking processes can effectively decrease the OCP residue concentration in edible green seaweed.

Towards sustainable European seaweed value chains: a triple P perspective

S. W. K. van den Burg et al.

Summary: Seaweeds are considered as an important future feedstock for Europe, but the region faces challenges in competing with Asian producers. To upscale the European seaweed sector, a focus on nature-inclusive production systems and the principles of the circular economy is crucial. Seaweeds should not be seen as a new product in the market, but rather integrated into the European food system for various uses.

Gut microbiota influence on oral bioaccessibility and intestinal transport of pesticides in Chaenomeles speciosa

Yan-Hong Shi et al.

Summary: Limited research has been conducted on the effects of human gut microbiota on the oral bioaccessibility and intestinal absorption of pesticide residues in food. This study found that gut microbiota play a dual role in contaminant release and metabolism, with Lactobacillus plantarum being a key bacterial species that significantly influences pesticide stability. The addition of L. plantarum to the system can reduce the relative amounts of pesticides, and the interaction between the food matrix and human gut microbiota leads to different absorption rates, with barrier effects increasing over time.

Assessment of organochlorine pesticides in different seaweed species of Thoothukudi coast, Tamil Nadu, South India

S. Sundhar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the accumulation of 17 OCPs in five species of macroalgae and found that Sargassum wightii accumulated higher concentrations of OCPs at site 1. Additionally, selective sorption of specific OCPs was observed in Caulerpa racemosa and Gracilaria edulis. The study concluded that the ability of seaweeds to accumulate pesticides is species-specific.

Innovation and Collaboration: Opportunities for the European Seaweed Sector in Global Value Chains

Trond Selnes et al.

Summary: The European seaweed sector is transitioning from harvesting wild stocks to harvesting and farming seaweed, necessitating a rethinking of its role on a global scale and the need for insight into the global seaweed value chain organization and innovation. Innovation in seaweed usage is occurring globally, with a focus on high-value applications not being enough to distinguish the nascent European sector from established regions such as Asia. Stronger collaboration and joint efforts are needed in developing safe and sustainable products to meet regulatory, lead firm, and consumer demands in order to facilitate further business development.
