Global stability and resolvent analyses of laminar boundary-layer flow interacting with viscoelastic patches

J-L Pfister et al.

Summary: This study investigates the attenuation of two-dimensional boundary-layer instabilities by a finite-length, viscoelastic patch using global linear stability theory. The analysis reveals reduced flow amplification in the frequency range of Tollmien-Schlichting waves and observed amplification at higher frequencies associated with travelling-wave flutter. The optimal coupled modes confirm the attenuation of the Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities while also capturing the amplification at higher frequencies.

The effect of spanwise and streamwise elastic coating on boundary layer transition

Peter T. T. Nagy et al.

Summary: Compliant coatings capable of delaying laminar-turbulent transition have been investigated. Previous research showed the benefit of streamwise motion of the coating in delaying the transition. In this study, a coating with purely in-plane motion is explored, and it is proven to delay laminar-turbulent transition without introducing new convective instabilities.

Coiled Phononic Crystal with Periodic Rotational Locking: Subwavelength Bragg Band Gaps

Carson L. Willey et al.

Summary: By locking the rotation degree of freedom and coiling the PnC, it is possible to greatly reduce the lattice constant and generate subwavelength band gaps at lower frequencies. This concept opens up possibilities for Phononic crystals in applications at smaller scales with larger band gaps.

Investigation of Transition Delay on a Wing Section by Dynamic Surface Deformation

Donald P. Rizzetta et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations and experimental studies were conducted to investigate the delay of transition to turbulence on a wing section using dynamic surface control technique. The results show that dynamic surface control can effectively delay the transition process and return a significant portion of the wing surface to laminar flow despite disturbances.
