What is the entrainment coefficient of a pure turbulent line plume?

James Richardson et al.

Summary: There has been no consensus on the value of the entrainment coefficient alpha for a pure plume. However, after theoretical developments, measurements, and evaluation, it is concluded that alpha = 0.11 +/- 15% should be adopted as the consensus value. This consensus value enhances the application of plume theory and allows for detailed comparison with other turbulent flows.

Characterising entrainment in fountains and negatively buoyant jets

L. Milton-McGurk et al.

Summary: The present study investigates both stages of turbulent fountain flow and finds that the velocity and buoyancy profiles in the initial negatively buoyant jet (NBJ) stage and the fully developed fountain stage differ. The fountains have a negative entrainment coefficient, indicating a net radial outflow of fluid from the inner flow (IF) to the outer flow (OF). The inflow component is proportional to the axial IF velocity, while the outflow depends on the local Richardson number (Ri).
