Effects of mesoscale turbulence on the wind-driven circulation in a closed basin with topography

L. Zavala Sanson

Summary: This paper studies the effects of time-dependent mesoscale turbulence on wind-driven ocean circulation and presents numerical simulations of the flow behavior with both large and small-scale forcing terms.

The Response of a Baroclinic Anticyclonic Eddy to Relative Wind Stress Forcing

Thomas Wilder et al.

Summary: Including the ocean surface current in wind stress calculation can damp mesoscale eddies and affect their longevity. Relative wind stress dissipates surface kinetic energy, generates additional vertical motions, and counteracts the damping effect of surface kinetic energy by increasing deep kinetic energy. It also modifies surface potential vorticity gradients, leading to an earlier destabilization of the eddy.

Scale of oceanic eddy killing by wind from global satellite observations

Shikhar Rai et al.

Summary: Using satellite data and a recent method to disentangle multiscale processes, it was found that wind deposits kinetic energy into the geostrophic ocean flow at scales larger than 260 km while removing energy from smaller scales, a process known as eddy killing. This process occurs at all times with seasonal variability, peaking in winter, and removes a substantial fraction of the wind power input in western boundary currents, serving as a major dissipation pathway for mesoscales, the ocean's most energetic scales.

Do Loop Current eddies stimulate productivity in the Gulf of Mexico?

Pierre Damien et al.

Summary: Long-living anticyclonic Loop Current eddies play a significant role in driving biogeochemical variability within the Gulf of Mexico, particularly during winter when they foster a large biomass increase in the upper ocean. These eddies exhibit anomalous surface chlorophyll distribution all year long, with primary production higher than surrounding open waters.
