Surfactant Control of Coffee Ring Formation in Carbon Nanotube Suspensions

N. S. Howard et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the coffee ring effect during colloidal droplet evaporation can be mitigated by adding a specific concentration of a surfactant. Experiments were conducted on carbon nanotube suspensions with different surfactant concentrations on various substrates. The results showed different pattern types, with a critical surfactant concentration resulting in highly uniform deposits with coffee ring subfeatures. Image analysis and profilometry allowed for the identification of these subfeatures and the inference of deposit coverage.

Evaporation of Sessile Droplets

Stephen K. Wilson et al.

Summary: The evaporation of a sessile droplet of liquid is a complex and multifaceted fundamental topic. It has drawn significant multidisciplinary research efforts in recent decades due to its key role in numerous physical and biological processes. This review focuses on the insights gained from simple mathematical models and discusses potential future directions in the field.

Evaporation of non-circular droplets

Alexander W. Wray et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamics of thin, non-circular droplets evaporating in the diffusion-limited regime. A novel asymptotic approach is used to solve the challenging non-rectilinear mixed boundary problem, and an asymptotic expansion for the evaporative flux from the free surface of the droplet is obtained. Despite its theoretical validity only for nearly circular droplets, it is demonstrated that this methodology can be successfully applied to droplets with various footprint shapes, including polygons and highly non-convex domains. The practicality of the solution is demonstrated by considering the analytically tractable case of solute deposition from large droplets, including a matched asymptotic analysis up to second order.

The nascent coffee ring with arbitrary droplet contact set: an asymptotic analysis

Summary: In this study, we investigate the influence of droplet geometry on the formation of the coffee-ring during evaporation. By analyzing two different evaporation models, we find that the curvature of the contact line affects the formation and growth of the coffee ring.

Quantitative analysis of the vertical-averaging approximation for evaporating thin liquid films

Christopher Larsson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the applicability of the vertical-averaging (VA) approximation for solute concentration in thin liquid films during evaporation. The results show that the critical value at which the VA approximation breaks down depends on the evaporation rate, rather than just the aspect ratio and Peclet number.

Summary: The evaporation of surfactant droplets on different leaf surfaces was studied through experiments and mathematical models, showing that most combinations follow standard evaporation modes except for wheat with high surfactant concentration, where nonstandard evaporation occurs due to additional mechanisms.

The nascent coffee ring: how solute diffusion counters advection

M. R. Moore et al.

Summary: The study investigated the initial evolution of the coffee ring formed by the evaporation of a thin droplet containing a dilute solute, showing that diffusion near the droplet contact line plays a key role in controlling the coffee-ring structure. Two evaporation models were analyzed, highlighting the limitations of the assumptions when the solute becomes less dilute and the effects of finite particle size and jamming. The results illustrated the limited validity of the models in the diffusive evaporative flux regime.

Contact-line deposits from multiple evaporating droplets

Alexander W. Wray et al.

Summary: Building on recent theoretical work, this study provides predictions for the nonuniform densities of contact-line deposits left on a substrate after multiple droplets containing suspended solid particles have completely evaporated. Experimental results demonstrate that the deposits are reduced where droplets are closest together, in quantitative agreement with the theoretical predictions. Predictions for a triplet of droplets arranged in an equilateral triangle show a more subtle effect of shielding on the deposit.

Summary: The study explores the effects of droplet evaporation on both smooth and rough inclined substrates, revealing that steeper inclination speeds up evaporation on smooth substrates, but the effects on rough substrates depend on the Bond number.
