Alpha tensor and dynamo excitation in turbulent fluids with anisotropic conductivity fluctuations

Oliver Gressel et al.

Summary: A mean-field theory of the electrodynamics of a turbulent fluid is proposed, where the molecular electric conductivity is correlated with the turbulent velocity fluctuation in the radial direction. It is found that a strong turbulence-induced field advection anti-parallel to the radial direction arises in homogeneous fluids, regardless of rotation. For rotating fluids, an additional alpha effect with the known symmetries and maximum at the poles is observed, except for fast rotation with Coriolis number exceeding unity. Numerical simulations using the nirvana code show that the radial advection velocity dominates over the alpha term. Simplified models demonstrate that alpha(2) dynamos are greatly affected by the radial pumping, leading to oscillatory solutions for gamma < alpha and highly exotic solutions for gamma > alpha, if they exist at all. Ultimately, dynamos based on finite conductivity-velocity correlations may not be effective for alpha(2)omega dynamos without strong shear.
