Identification and reconstruction of high-frequency fluctuations evolving on a low-frequency periodic limit cycle: application to turbulent cylinder flow

Lucas Franceschini et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of low-frequency periodic motion on high-frequency turbulent component in turbulent flows. The authors propose extended versions of spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) and resolvent analysis to extract and reconstruct the high-frequency turbulent fluctuation field based on the phase of the low-frequency periodic motion. The validity of the quasi-steady approximation is assessed using a simple model, and reasonable agreement is shown between the extracted spatio-temporal fluctuation field and the prediction of quasi-steady resolvent analysis in the case of turbulent flow around a squared-section cylinder.

From Bypass Transition to Flow Control and Data-Driven Turbulence Modeling: An Input-Output Viewpoint

Mihailo R. Jovanovic

Summary: Transient growth and resolvent analyses are used to assess nonasymptotic properties of fluid flows, with resolvent analysis enhancing insights by detailed examination of input-output responses. The differentiating feature plays a key role in quantifying the importance of mechanisms for bypass transition in wall-bounded shear flows and in explaining how turbulent jets generate noise. The utility of a stochastic framework in addressing various challenges including transition in complex fluids, flow control, and turbulence modeling is highlighted.

Data-driven resolvent analysis

Benjamin Herrmann et al.

Summary: Resolvent analysis identifies the most responsive forcings and receptive states of a dynamic system based on its governing equations. A purely data-driven algorithm has been developed in this work to perform Resolvent analysis without recourse to the governing equations, demonstrating its applicability and data requirements. This method has potential to lower the barrier of entry to Resolvent research and applications by providing a completely equation-free and adjoint-free approach.

Optimal eddy viscosity for resolvent-based models of coherent structures in turbulent jets

Ethan Pickering et al.

Summary: Linear resolvent analysis of turbulent mean-flow fields can qualitatively capture characteristics of coherent structures in turbulent flows. By using a data-driven approach to optimize the eddy viscosity, the agreement between resolvent and SPOD modes can be substantially improved, reaching over 90% agreement at certain frequencies. A fixed model for eddy viscosity with a single constant can also provide substantial agreement between different modes in turbulent jets.

Unsteady control of supersonic turbulent cavity flow based on resolvent analysis

Qiong Liu et al.

Summary: Resolvent analysis is used to develop a control strategy to attenuate pressure fluctuations in turbulent flow over a rectangular cavity, achieving significant reduction in pressure fluctuations. Introducing three-dimensional unsteady blowing along the cavity leading edge effectively suppresses oscillations and reduces pressure root mean square level along cavity walls. The control strategy based on resolvent analysis shows promise for application at higher Reynolds numbers with further validation.

Summary: Various approximations have been proposed to estimate basic hydrodynamic quantities, especially the frequency of a limit cycle. Both the RZIF and SCM methods have been successful in certain cases, but the SCM has limitations in reproducing the nonlinear frequency accurately.
