Trophic ecology of a migratory shorebird community at a globally important non-breeding site: combining DNA metabarcoding and conventional techniques

Edna Correia et al.

Summary: Detailed studies on the diet of whole-bird communities are lacking, but they are essential for understanding community structure and species persistence in ecosystems. We studied the diet of a shorebird community in the Bijagos Archipelago, West Africa using molecular and morphological prey identification. Our results showed that shorebirds consumed a high diversity of prey, especially highly mobile prey like crustaceans and fish, which are typically overlooked in shorebird studies. Our study highlights the importance of reducing competition through diverse prey consumption in a key non-breeding area for migratory shorebirds.

Global changes in coastal wetlands of importance for non-breeding shorebirds

Carlos D. Santos et al.

Summary: Shorebird declines are happening globally, with habitat quality deterioration as a major contributing factor. Current studies have geographical bias, but remote sensing can provide a standardized approach to analyze the changes in shorebird habitats. This study used remote sensing data to analyze the changes in IBAs over the past two decades, revealing significant losses of tidal flats and expansion of marshland and urban areas.

Where land meets sea: Intertidal areas as key-habitats for sharks and rays

Guido Leurs et al.

Summary: Intertidal habitats, previously studied mainly from the perspective of shorebirds, are also crucial for marine predators such as sharks and rays. Our synthesis reveals that at least 43 shark and 45 ray species, with over half being threatened, utilize these habitats for various purposes. However, the motivation behind their use of intertidal habitats remains unclear due to observational limitations.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the growth, maturity, and diet of the pearl whipray Fontitrygon margaritella from the Bijagos Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau. The results show that F. margaritella is relatively fast-growing, matures early, and experiences ontogenetic diet shifts.

Understanding the consequences of sea level rise: the ecological implications of losing intertidal habitat

Vera Rullens et al.

Summary: Sea level rise has significant ecological and social repercussions, particularly affecting intertidal areas. The reduction of intertidal areas alters the distribution and extent of habitats and communities, impacting coastal food webs, ecosystem functioning, and service provision. Pre-emptive planning and adaptive management are crucial to increase resilience to the effects of sea level rise.

Every fish in the sea is meat and so are guitarfishes: Socio-economic drivers of a guitarfish fishery in Ghana

Issah Seidu et al.

Summary: Rhino rays, including guitarfishes, are important species in fisheries worldwide. However, there is a lack of information about these fisheries in West Africa. This study conducted surveys and interviews in key ray-fishing communities in Ghana and found a decline in guitarfish catches, driven by international trade and local consumption.

Coastal waters of a marine protected area of the Bijagos Archipelago, West Africa, shelter juvenile fishes of economic and ecological importance

Edna Correia et al.

Summary: Small pelagic fish play a crucial role in controlling marine ecosystems, with Sardinella maderensis being the main prey for marine predators and key to the management of the Bijagos Archipelago. While fish abundance varies between seasons and years, community composition remains similar, suggesting human activities may contribute to abundance differences.
