Does Using Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes to Mitigate COVID-19 Transmission Also Reduce Indoor Air Concentrations of PFAS and Phthalates?

Robin E. Dodson et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of an air filtration method, CR Box, on indoor air concentrations of SVOCs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deployment of CR Boxes in an office building resulted in lower concentrations of several PFAS and phthalates. However, there were also increases in the concentrations of certain PFAS and phthalates, although these increases were not statistically significant. The results suggest that CR Boxes can reduce exposure to certain SVOCs but may contribute to increased sound levels.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and its effects on human health: An overeview

Manthar Ali Mallah et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemical contaminants of environmental significance. PAH pollution mainly comes from anthropogenic sources and can pose a significant threat to human health. Long-term exposure to PAHs can lead to tumor development in multiple organs and increase the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown a relationship between PAH exposure, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis.

Targeted and Nontargeted Detection and Characterisation of Trace Organic Chemicals in Human Serum and Plasma Using QuEChERS Extraction

Katherine E. Manz et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution mass spectrometry method for both targeted and nontargeted analysis of trace organic contaminants using QuEChERS extraction. The method performs well in the analysis of both target and nontarget compounds in serum samples. The study identified a large number of chemicals in human exposome and categorized them accordingly.

Assessment of Five Pesticides as Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals: Effects on Estrogen Receptors and Aromatase

Marta Gea et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the interference of five pesticides on estrogen biosynthesis and estrogen signaling, finding that while the pesticides did not impact aromatase activity, Methiocarb was able to alter estrogen signaling at high doses. This suggests that Methiocarb should be considered a potential endocrine disruptor.

Aroma compounds identified in cooked meat: A review

Amjad Sohail et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the research on odorants in cooked meat and discusses their formation mechanisms. A total of 332 odorants were identified, including compounds from lipid degradation, Maillard reaction, and other sources. Short-chain aliphatic aldehydes and sulfur- or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds were found to be the frequently potent odorants in different cooked meat species. The analysis suggests that the variation of odorants is mainly due to lipid degradation. This review provides guidance for improving the flavor of cooked meat and meat flavorings.

A state-of-the-art review on indoor air pollution and strategies for indoor air pollution control

Javier Gonzalez-Martin et al.

Summary: Indoor air pollution is a significant issue, leading to millions of premature deaths and considerable economic losses annually. Traditional physical-chemical technologies are limited by low concentrations and diversity of pollutants, thus biotechnologies are considered a cost-effective and sustainable solution for indoor air purification.

A review on pesticides in flower production: A push to reduce human exposure and environmental contamination

Patricia C. G. Pereira et al.

Summary: Flower import regulations are restricted for food security and biosafety, but the lack of pesticide limits for ornamental flowers can result in overuse of pesticides and trade of contaminated products. Many countries ban certain pesticides in flower production, with more research in developed countries, but there are still risks to both the environment and human health.

Characterization of nitroaromatic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter from Beijing

Zhiheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study collected PM2.5 samples in Beijing and characterized atmospheric NACs for the first time using LC-Orbitrap MS technology, identifying and quantifying 165 out of 190 NACs, as well as nitro-polyaromatic compounds. Nitrophenols and nitrocatechols were the most abundant NACs species, accounting for 31% and 32% of total NACs, respectively. The study also found that NACs had a significant contribution to organic matter and PM2.5 in winter, with major sources identified as coal combustion, biomass combustion, dust, and transportation.

In Vivo Contaminant Monitoring and Metabolomic Profiling in Plants Exposed to Carbamates via a Novel Microextraction Fiber

Shuqin Liu et al.

Summary: The study developed a biocompatible SPME fiber for tracking the bioaccumulation and elimination of carbamates and their metabolites in plants. The results showed rapid changes in plant metabolism after exposure to carbamates, which were not fully reversed even after the contaminants were eliminated.
