UBP12/UBP13-mediated deubiquitination of salicylic acid receptor NPR3 suppresses plant immunity

Yu Zhou et al.

Summary: Salicylic acid (SA) is a critical defense hormone for plant immunity. NPR1 and its paralogs NPR3 and NPR4 play important roles in mediating SA signal transduction. This study reveals that UBP12 and UBP13 negatively regulate plant immunity by promoting the stability of NPR3 and NPR4 through deubiquitination.

Mapping the signaling network of BIN2 kinase using TurboID-mediated biotin labeling and phosphoproteomics

Tae-Wuk Kim et al.

Summary: Combining TurboID-mediated proximity labeling with quantitative phosphoproteomics, this study identified BIN2 signaling components including kinase substrates in vivo, revealing the cellular functions of BIN2. The TurboID-based proximity labeling effectively and specifically captures the substrates of kinases and phosphatases. The proteomic analysis establishes the BIN2 signaling network and uncovers important insights into the signaling network controlling key cellular functions in plant growth and acclimation.

Deubiquitinating enzymes UBP12 and UBP13 stabilize the brassinosteroid receptor BRI1

Yongming Luo et al.

Summary: Protein ubiquitination is a crucial post-translational modification that regulates diverse cellular processes. In this study, two deubiquitinating enzymes, UBP12 and UBP13, were discovered to directly target the PM-localized brassinosteroid receptor BRI1 in Arabidopsis. They play essential roles in governing BRI1 abundance and degradation, and thereby regulate plant growth.

The deubiquitinases UBP12 and UBP13 integrate with the E3 ubiquitin ligase XBAT35.2 to modulate VPS23A stability in ABA signaling

Guangchao Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that UBP12 and UBP13, as deubiquitinating enzymes, modulate ABA signaling and drought tolerance in Arabidopsis by deubiquitinating and stabilizing VPS23A and the E3 ligase XBAT35.2. This finding demonstrates the important regulatory role of deubiquitination in ABA response.

UBP12 and UBP13 deubiquitinases destabilize the CRY2 blue light receptor to regulate Arabidopsis growth

Louise N. Lindback et al.

Summary: Light is a crucial signal sensed by CRY receptors to regulate growth and circadian clock. This study uncovers the role of UBP12/13 deubiquitinases in negatively regulating CRY2 and modulating hypocotyl growth. UBP12/13 interacts with COP1 to stabilize it, leading to degradation of CRY2 under blue light. The findings provide insight into the regulation of deubiquitinase activity and its role in controlling plant growth.

Organ-specific COP1 control of BES1 stability adjusts plant growth patterns under shade or warmth

Cecilia Costigliolo Rojas et al.

Summary: Under shade or warmth conditions, cotyledon cell expansion is inhibited and hypocotyl growth is promoted in Arabidopsis thaliana. The activity of the BES1 transcription factor is regulated through transcriptional and post-translational mechanisms, resulting in the repression of cotyledon cell expansion.

The emerging roles of deubiquitinases in plant proteostasis

Michael J. Skelly

Summary: Proper regulation of protein homeostasis is crucial for survival. Ubiquitination is a widespread post-translational modification in eukaryotic cells, while deubiquitinases (DUBs) catalyze the removal of ubiquitin. DUB dysfunction is implicated in many human diseases. The study of plant DUBs has been relatively understudied, but recent findings on new DUB substrates provide insights into their cellular functions.

Ubiquitin-specific proteases UBP12 and UBP13 promote shade avoidance response by enhancing PIF7 stability

Yu Zhou et al.

Summary: Changes in light quality due to neighbor proximity regulate plant growth processes, with PIF7 playing a central role in connecting shade light perception and growth responses. UBP12 and UBP13 are identified as positive regulators in shade avoidance responses, maintaining PIF7 stability and abundance through deubiquitination.
