Two cyclic electron flows around photosystem I differentially participate in C4 photosynthesis

Takako Ogawa et al.

Summary: C-4 plants assimilate CO2 more efficiently than C-3 plants due to their C-4 cycle, but it requires additional ATP which may be supplied by cyclic electron flow (CEF). In this study, the contribution of two CEF routes to C-4 photosynthesis in Flaveria bidentis was investigated. The NDH-dependent route was found to significantly contribute to C-4 photosynthesis, while the PGR5/PGRL1-dependent route cannot complement the NDH-dependent route.

Rapid CO2 changes cause oscillations in photosynthesis that implicate PSI acceptor-side limitations

Alan M. McClain et al.

Summary: Oscillations in CO2 assimilation rate and associated fluorescence parameters have been observed for nearly 50 years, but the mechanics of these oscillations are poorly understood. In this study, the researchers used dynamic assimilation techniques (DATs) to measure the rate of CO2 assimilation and found that TPU-limiting conditions alone were insufficient to cause oscillations. Ramps of CO2 caused oscillations proportional in strength to the speed of the ramp, and ramps induced oscillations with worse outcomes than step changes in CO2 concentration.

High cyclic electron transfer via the PGR5 pathway in the absence of photosynthetic control

Gustaf E. Degen et al.

Summary: High PGR5-dependent cyclic electron transfer increases proton motive force, but without ATP synthase regulation, it cannot induce photosynthetic control. The light reactions of photosynthesis generate NADPH and ATP through electron and proton transfers, which are essential for CO2 fixation. The Delta pH component of proton motive force also plays a role in regulating photosystem II and photoprotection. Increasing proton influx via cyclic electron transfer or decreasing proton efflux via ATP synthase regulation can adjust Delta pH. However, high cyclic electron transfer in the absence of ATP synthase regulation is insufficient for photoprotection of photosystem I.

Summary: The PGR5 protein interacts with PGRL1 and PGRL2, and the mutation in PGR5(G130S) leads to photosynthetic defects. PGR5 is required alongside PGRL1 to avoid harmful effects on plant performance.

The Complementary Roles of Chloroplast Cyclic Electron Transport and Mitochondrial Alternative Oxidase to Ensure Photosynthetic Performance

Avesh Chadee et al.

Summary: Chloroplasts use light energy and a linear electron transport pathway to generate NADPH and ATP, which may result in energy imbalance. Chloroplast cyclic electron transport and the chloroplast malate valve can prevent this imbalance.

Disentangling chloroplast ATP synthase regulation by proton motive force and thiol modulation in Arabidopsis leaves

Felix Buchert et al.

Summary: The gamma subunit redox domain in the chloroplast ATP synthase plays an important role in environmental fine-tuning and maximizing photosynthetic efficiency, as validated in vivo. Its dithiol configuration facilitates photosynthesis by driving ATP synthesis at a lower proton gradient activation level, as shown through in vivo studies.

Gas exchange measurements in the unsteady state

Aaron J. Saathoff et al.

Summary: Leaf level gas exchange is a common technique for measuring leaf physiological properties in real-time, traditionally requiring steady-state conditions for accuracy. However, a new dynamic assimilation method based on first principles allows for quicker gas exchange measurements, improving efficiency for high throughput applications.
