Impaired JAK-STAT pathway signaling in leukocytes of the frail elderly

Leonard Daniel Samson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between cytokine signaling, chronic low-grade inflammation, and frailty in elderly individuals aged 65-74 years. The results show that individuals with higher frailty scores have lower cytokine-induced pSTAT responses, indicating dysfunctional cytokine signaling. The associations between frailty and cytokine signaling differ between men and women, with women showing lower pSTAT1 responses in monocytes and men showing lower pSTAT5 responses in CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells. Additionally, lower IL-10-induced pSTAT3 responses in men are related to higher frailty scores and higher CRP levels over the past 20 years, suggesting defective resolution of low-grade inflammation in older men.
