Screen media use by Portuguese children in 2009 and 2016: a repeated cross-sectional study

Summary: The study found an increase in screen-time among Portuguese children aged 3-6 years from 2009/10 to 2016/17, with a particular rise in mobile media usage. Boys, children with parents of lower education levels, and unemployed parents were more likely to exceed screen-time recommendations.

Summary: This study evaluated the physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration of girls and boys aged 6-9 years in Europe using data from the WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative. The results showed heterogeneous prevalence of engagement in physical activity and achievement of healthy screen time and sleep duration across the region. Policymakers and stakeholders should increase opportunities for young people to participate in daily physical activity and address excessive screen time and short sleep duration to improve children's overall physical and mental health.
