Antimicrobial activity and constituents of the leaf essential oil of Syzygium petelotii Merr. & Perry and Syzygium syzygioides (Miq.) Merr. & Perry from Vietnam

Le Thi Huong et al.

Summary: The essential oil constituents and antimicrobial activity of Syzygium petelotii Merr. & Perry and Syzygium syzygioides (Miq.) Merr. & Perry from Vietnam were studied. The major compounds of S. petelotii were γ-guaiene, β-caryophyllene, α-pinene, and β-pinene. Caryophyllene oxide, α-pinene, β-pinene, and spathulenol were the main constituents of S. syzygioides. Both essential oils exhibited antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi. This is the first report on the chemical compositions and antimicrobial activity of these essential oils.

Essential Oils from the Leaves of Fokienia hodginsii (Dunn) A. Henry & H. H. Thomas and Amentotaxus argotaenia (Hance) Pilg. and Their Antimicrobial Activity

Nguyen Trung Thanh et al.

Summary: Essential oils from Fokienia hodginsii and Amentotaxus argotaenia were extracted and analyzed for their chemical components and antimicrobial activity. The major components of F. hodginsii were alpha-pinene, limonene, myrcene, and beta-pinene, while A. argotaenia featured alpha-pinene, delta-cadinene, and beta-selinene. The essential oil of F. hodginsii showed potent antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Bacillus cereus, and A. argotaenia showed activity against E. faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as the most anti-candidal action against Candida albicans. The chemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of F. hodginsii essential oil were reported for the first time.

Chemical Compositions, Mosquito Larvicidal and Antimicrobial Activities of Essential Oils of Hedychium stenopetalum Lodd. and Hedychium villosum Wall. of Zingiberaceae from Vietnam

Le T. Huong et al.

Summary: The chemical constituents, larvicidal and antimicrobial activities of essential oils from Hedychium stenopetalum and Hedychium villosum were investigated. The results showed that these essential oils displayed strong larvicidal activity against mosquitoes and antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the further utilization of H. stenopetalum and H. villosum as insecticides and antimicrobial agents.

Larvicidal Activity of Essential Oils From Piper Species Against Strains of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Resistant to Pyrethroids

Adalberto Alves Pereira Filho et al.

Summary: The study revealed the larvicidal activity of essential oils from Piper species against Aedes aegypti, showing similar efficacy in strains resistant and susceptible to pyrethroids. Phenylpropanoids and monoterpenes were identified as the main active compounds in the oils, demonstrating high toxicity to larvae.
