Detailed nitrogen and phosphorus flow analysis, nutrient use efficiency and circularity in the agri-food system of a livestock-intensive region

Ruben Vingerhoets et al.

Summary: The agri-food value chain is a significant contributor to nitrogen and phosphorus emissions and their impacts. The EU's farm-to-fork strategy aims to reduce nutrient emissions and fertilizer use. Substance flow analysis is a useful method for studying the agri-food chain, but current studies lack detail in distinguishing between nodes, products, and emissions. This study presents a highly-detailed SFA for the livestock-intensive region of Flanders, Belgium, which identifies recoverable streams and calculates novel indicators. Optimized nutrient recycling could exceed the targets set by the F2F strategy. Future research should consider concentration and quality in SFAs.

Implementation of uncertainty analysis and moment-independent global sensitivity analysis for full-scale life cycle assessment models

Stefano Cucurachi et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) models and databases have become more complex, requiring systematic methods to evaluate the uncertainty and sensitivity of their results. This paper presents a software implementation that can be applied to full-scale LCA models. The approach and software implementation are demonstrated through a case study on crystalline silicon photovoltaics.

Toxicity impacts in the environmental footprint method: calculation principles

Serenella Sala et al.

Summary: This paper presents the principles and methods for calculating the set of characterisation factors for toxicity-related impact categories in the EU environmental footprint version 3.0. The updates to the USEtox(R) model and the use of high-quality data from EU agencies have resulted in an increased number of characterised chemicals and improved alignment between LCA toxicity data and data used for risk assessment purposes.

Towards sustainable methane supply from local bioresources: Anaerobic digestion, gasification, and gas upgrading

Concetta Lodato et al.

Summary: Methane is a versatile and storable energy carrier that plays a significant role in the European transition to low carbon energy. A study investigates the potential of using local residual bioresources to supply bio-based methane. The results show that utilizing these resources can meet regional methane demands and reduce carbon emissions.

Understanding the environmental impacts of biogas utilization for energy production through life cycle assessment: An action towards reducing emissions

Ahmed Alengebawy et al.

Summary: Compared to renewable energy sources, burning fossil fuels has more severe environmental impacts. This study conducted a life cycle assessment to compare the environmental impacts of three biogas utilization scenarios and found that upgrading was the most sustainable option.

Environmental sustainability assessment of pig manure mono- and co-digestion and dynamic land application of the digestate

Yizhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impacts of pig manure management methods using life cycle assessment, and found that co-digestion of pig manure with grass silage performed best in several impact categories. The nutrient profiles, soil conditions, and regional environmental regulations play crucial roles in determining the environmental outcomes of pig manure management.

Improved environmental sustainability and bioenergy recovery through pig manure and food waste on-farm co-digestion in Ireland

Yan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that the co-digestion of food waste and pig manure performs better in reducing environmental impacts compared to existing practices, but there are still hotspots such as methane emissions during digestate storage, ammonia emissions during land application, and energy consumption. The global warming potential only becomes negative when the food waste proportion is over 2000 t/yr.
