Positive Priming Effects Induced by Allochthonous and Autochthonous Organic Matter Input in the Lake Sediments With Different Salinity

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: The microbial mineralization of algal and grass organic matter in lake sediments with different salinity levels was investigated. The addition of algal and grass organic matter significantly increased CO2 production rates in the sediments. The intensity of positive priming effect induced by grass organic matter was higher than that induced by algal organic matter. The intensity of positive priming effect induced by both algal and grass organic matter decreased with increasing salinity.

In-situ measurement on air-water flux of CH4, CO2 and their carbon stable isotope in lakes of northeast Tibetan Plateau

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: Inland waters serve as significant sources of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, with high-altitude saline lakes on the Tibetan Plateau showing high CH4 concentrations as sources to the atmosphere but acting as sinks for CO2. Salinity, fDOM, temperature, and dissolved oxygen are key factors influencing CH4 and CO2 diffusive fluxes in these lakes, with a distinctly different isotopic source values of CO2 and CH4 found in Qinghai Lake and Hala Lake.

Water pollution characteristics and influencing factors of closed lake in a semiarid area: a case study of Daihai Lake, China

Xiaohui Ren et al.

Summary: In semiarid areas, the closed lakes are crucial for maintaining local ecosystem functions. However, many closed lakes are experiencing continuous degradation of water quality. This study scientifically and comprehensively evaluated the water quality of Daihai Lake, a closed lake in a semiarid region of China, by analyzing nine water quality parameters using the water quality index (WQI) and statistical techniques. The results showed that the water quality of Daihai Lake has improved in recent years but remains poor, with the main contaminants being CODMn, BOD5, TN, TP, and F-. The water quality had small spatial variability but distinct variations between the dry and wet seasons. Human activities and climatic conditions were identified as the main factors influencing water quality variation. The minimum WQI determined using key water quality parameters could effectively reflect the actual water quality. These findings provide valuable references for lake ecosystem protection and water resources management.

Drivers of spatial and seasonal variations of CO2 and CH4 fluxes at the sediment water interface in a shallow eutrophic lake

Heyang Sun et al.

Summary: Shallow eutrophic lakes have a significant impact on CO2 and CH4 emissions from inland waters, but the processes and environmental influences are still poorly understood. This study examines the spatial and seasonal dynamics of CO2 and CH4 fluxes and their relationship with porewater nutrients in Lake Ulansuhai, Northern China. It finds that environmental factors and porewater nutrient concentrations play a key role in driving CO2 and CH4 fluxes.

Effect of Eutrophication Control Methods on the Generation of Greenhouse Carbon Gases in Sediment

Dangelo A. Sandoval-Chacon et al.

Summary: The accumulation of nutrients in water bodies can lead to increased concentrations of organic matter in sediment, which in turn generates greenhouse carbon gases. The application of eutrophication control methods can effectively reduce the generation and emission of greenhouse carbon gases in sediment.

Spatial methane pattern in a deep freshwater lake: Relation to water depth and topography

Lingling Li et al.

Summary: The study on spatial distribution of CH4 in deep freshwater lakes reveals that the profundal zone has the highest CH4 content and production potential, while surface water CH4 is not closely related to the sediment production sites. Variations in sediment properties across the lake lead to restricted CH4 dynamics.

High methane emissions from thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau are largely attributed to ebullition fluxes

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: CH4 emissions from thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau show significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity, with ebullition being the main CH4 pathway and lake type and organic matter content influencing CH4 diffusion fluxes. Our findings highlight the importance of considering ebullition CH4 fluxes to improve the accuracy of estimations for CH4 emissions from thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau.

Summary: The study found that eutrophication plays an important role in shaping the spatial distribution of diffusive CH4 fluxes in lakes, with parameters related to eutrophication having a significant positive relationship with CH4 emissions. Distance to shore and water depth are inversely correlated with CH4 emissions and modify the effects of eutrophication.

Anthropogenic and Environmental Constraints on the Microbial Methane Cycle in Coastal Sediments

Anna J. Wallenius et al.

Summary: Large amounts of methane are produced by methanogenic archaea in anoxic sediments, with over 90% of it being oxidized via sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (S-AOM) in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ). Coastal systems contribute to the majority of total marine methane emissions, and factors like eutrophication and climate change can influence methane emissions from these systems. Further studies are needed to understand the processes and microorganisms involved in methane cycling and to predict methane emissions accurately from coastal zones in the future.

Hydrochemistry and nutrients determined the distribution of greenhouse gases in saline groundwater

Jiarui Li et al.

Summary: The distribution of GHGs in groundwater is influenced by the total dissolved solids concentration, with CO2 decreasing and CH4 and N2O increasing as TDS declines, indicating a clear spatial pattern. While the distribution of CO2 depends on bicarbonate and TDS, CH4 and N2O are primarily generated through methanogenesis and denitrification processes.
