Forest-cover change rather than climate change determined giant panda's population persistence

Yue Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that forest-cover change is the most important factor driving giant panda's population persistence, while the synergistic effect of climate change and land-use change has a relatively small impact. These findings highlight the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the relative effects of climate change and land-use change in addressing global biodiversity loss.

Summary: The Cerrado biome in Brazil has experienced environmental problems such as soil loss and increased water turbidity due to changes in land use/cover. This study evaluates the impacts of soil loss and sediment delivery ratio over the past 30 years, simulates future soil erosion scenarios, and investigates a sediment delivery event in 2018. The results highlight the importance of assessing land use changes on soil erosion and sediment export, and the need for better management practices to reduce soil loss and maintain ecosystem services.

A new regionalization of rainfall patterns based on wavelet transform information and hierarchical cluster analysis in northeastern Algeria

Bilel Zerouali et al.

Summary: Due to its geographical location, Algeria experiences high spatiotemporal rainfall variability. This study analyzed data from 69 rain gauges located in different regions of northeastern Algeria from 1970-2007 to understand the regional rainfall patterns. The analysis revealed that the northern humid region is dominated by periodic annual fluctuations, while the arid regions experience long-term periodic phenomena. Additionally, the study found a long period of drought during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, with a recent tendency towards wetter conditions since the late 1990s.

Summary: Meteorological drought and hydrological drought are closely related, and studying the connection between them is crucial for water resource planning and drought risk analysis. The study in the Wadi Ouahrane Basin in Northwest Algeria found that runoff has higher temporal correlation compared to rainfall. The Joint Deficit Hydro-meteorological Index (JDHMI) can accurately reflect the probability of a common hydrological and meteorological deficit situation.
