Mechanistic insights into polyhydroxyalkanoate-enhanced denitrification capacity of microbial community: Evolution of community structure and intracellular electron transfer of nitrogen metabolism

Ke Ding et al.

Summary: This study found that polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have advantages in screening specific denitrifying bacteria compared with other carbon sources like glucose and sodium acetate. The microbial community screened by PHA was identified, and the environmental functions of these bacteria were analyzed. PHA improved denitrification efficiency by increasing the expression of key enzymes and accelerating the assimilation rate of nitrate. Mechanistic insights into the PHA-enhanced denitrification capacity of the microbial community can provide novel options for eutrophic surface water remediation.

Efficient nitrate removal of immobilized mixed aerobic denitrifying bacteria and community dynamics response to temperature and low carbon/nitrogen polluted water

Zhaoying Chen et al.

Summary: The denitrification performance of immobilized mixed aerobic denitrifying bacteria (IMADB) was investigated. IMADB showed strong temperature adaptability under low Carbon/Nitrogen conditions. Carrier played a major role in nitrate removal, especially at lower temperatures. Carrier had relatively higher richness, diversity, and evenness, and species positively correlated with nitrate removal efficiency had the largest OTUs and abundance. The total nitrogen removal efficiency of IMADB reached a high level in the natural water system.

Enzymatic regulation of N2O production by denitrifying bacteria in the sludge of biological nitrogen removal process

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the activities of denitrifying enzymes in a continuously operating sequencing batch reactor under different organic loads. The results showed that the enzyme activities increased with the increase of organic loads, and the catalytic processes of different enzymes were influenced by substrate concentration and carbon sources. The Nor maintained excess catalytic activity when the electron donor and substrate were sufficient, while the N2OR had generally weaker activity. The mechanism of enzyme activities regulating the production of N2O was clarified.

Bacterial Biofilms on Polyamide Nanofibers: Factors Influencing Biofilm Formation and Evaluation

Simona Lencova et al.

Summary: The study examined the formation of biofilms on electrospun polyamide nanofibers, finding that various bacteria could attach and form biofilms on these materials, with different methods yielding varying outcomes. Factors such as fiber diameter, air permeability, and AgNO3 functionalization were shown to significantly influence biofilm formation. Additionally, statistical analysis confirmed that fiber diameter was a crucial factor in biofilm formation, and functionalization with AgNO3 effectively suppressed biofilm formation, potentially reducing the risk of infections from contaminated medical devices.
