Patterns and drivers of the degradability of dissolved organic matter in dryland soils on the Tibetan Plateau

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the quantity and weight of DOM in dryland soils decreased, while the degradability of DOM increased with decreasing precipitation. Desert soils showed a 23.4% increase in DOM degradability compared to meadow soils, with a threefold higher ratio of MBC to total organic carbon. The results suggest that labile DOM accelerates microbial growth and SOM decomposition in desert soils.

Eutrophication and watershed characteristics shape changes in dissolved organic matter chemistry along two river-estuarine transects

Ding He et al.

Summary: This study found that eutrophication and reed marshes significantly influence the concentration and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal carbon cycling. The Daliao River, characterized by high eutrophication, exhibited higher levels of protein-like fluorescent components and stable carbon isotopes, indicating a higher content of autochthonous DOM.

Molecular composition of dissolved organic matter in saline lakes of the Qing-Tibetan Plateau

Hongchen Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial community structures in saline lakes. The dominant DOM molecules in these lakes were found to be aliphatic compounds, highly unsaturated, and oxygen poor/rich compounds. The composition of DOM was significantly correlated with environmental variables and microbial components. The findings highlight the importance of microbial factors in explaining the variation of DOM molecular composition in saline lakes.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter processing between surface sediment porewater and overlying bottom water in the Yangtze River Estuary

Yuping Zhou et al.

Summary: Exchange of dissolved organic matter (DOM) at the sediment-water interface plays a crucial role in the global elemental cycle. A study of the Yangtze River Estuary revealed that DOM exchange primarily occurs from sediment porewater to bottom water, driven by dissolved organic carbon concentration gradient and hydrodynamic force. DOM in muddy areas is enriched with aromatic substances, which may affect the quality of organic carbon mobilized from land to coastal ocean.

Lagrangian profiles of riverine autotrophy, organic matter transformation, and micropollutants at extreme drought

Norbert Kamjunke et al.

Summary: This study investigated autotrophic processes, heterotrophic carbon utilization, and micropollutant concentrations in the River Elbe, Germany, using a Lagrangian sampling design. The results showed that under base flow conditions, there was an increase in phytoplankton biomass and photosynthesis from upstream to downstream, while concentrations of dissolved macronutrients decreased. Bacterial abundance and production increased less than in wetter years, and there were changes in bacterial community composition downstream. DOM components increased due to microbial production, while some pollutants showed higher concentrations downstream. However, their magnitudes were not distinctly different from conditions at medium discharges.

Experimental Insight into the Enigmatic Persistence of Marine Refractory Dissolved Organic Matter

Xiaoxuan Zheng et al.

Summary: More than 90% of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is biologically recalcitrant. The recalcitrance can be attributed to either intrinsically refractory molecules or low molecule concentrations, but their relative contributions are debated. Characterizing the molecular composition and bioavailability of marine DOM is critical for understanding this uncertainty.

Solid-Phase Extraction of Aquatic Organic Matter: Loading-Dependent Chemical Fractionation and Self-Assembly

Xianyu Kong et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial component in marine and freshwater environments, playing a fundamental role in global biogeochemical cycles. The study found that increasing sorbent loading can reduce the extraction efficiencies of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), fluorescence, absorbance, and polar organic substances. Maintaining a similar relative DOC loading on the sorbent is crucial to avoid chemical fractionation and ensure accurate sample comparison.

Molecular Signatures of Glacial Dissolved Organic Matter From Svalbard and Greenland

Anne M. Kellerman et al.

Summary: Glaciers and ice sheets store significant amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and their rapid mass loss may increase fluxes of DOM into proglacial environments. Research on the molecular composition of glacially derived DOM is limited, but findings from Arctic glacial environments show differences in DOM between Greenland and Svalbard, suggesting varied sources of DOM. Supraglacial meltwater samples contain abundant aliphatic and peptide-like formulae, indicating energy-rich sources that contribute to microbial degradation in coastal systems as glaciers lose mass.
