The produced hydrochars exhibited higher C content and lower O content, with MIS-180 identified as the optimal sample for adsorption of Cu2+ and NH4+. The higher adsorption capacities of MIS-180 were attributed to its higher number of O-containing functional groups. Cu2+ adsorption followed the 2nd order kinetic model, while NH4+ adsorption followed the 1st-order kinetic model, due to different mechanisms involved.
