Unique stratification of biofilm density in heterotrophic membrane-aerated biofilms: An experimental and modeling study

Mengfei Li et al.

Summary: We have found that a high cell density band forms in heterotrophic membrane-aerated biofilms, and this unique behavior is explained in this study. The density of biofilms affects reaction rates, growth rates, substrate diffusion, and mechanical behavior. However, the mechanisms and dynamics of biofilm density development are poorly understood. Through optical coherence tomography, the density development of a membrane-aerated biofilm was observed and analyzed, revealing the formation of a high-density layer in the biofilm interior over time. This dense layer is influenced by changes in growth rates and can be explained using a mathematical model.

Kinetic Effects of Ciprofloxacin, Carbamazepine, and Bisphenol on Biomass in Membrane Bioreactor System at Low Temperatures to Treat Urban Wastewater

Laura Antinolo Bermudez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of micropollutants on the biodegradation of organic substrate in a membrane bioreactor under different hydraulic retention times and low-temperature conditions. The results showed that the longer the hydraulic retention time, the faster the biodegradation of the organic substrate, regardless of the temperature. However, low temperatures negatively affected the growth rate of heterotrophic biomass. The combined effect of the pharmaceuticals did not worsen the biomass yield compared with individual effects.

Predicting and improving the microbial removal of organic micropollutants during wastewater treatment: A review

Ana B. Rios-Miguel et al.

Summary: Organic micropollutants (OMPs), including pharmaceuticals and pesticides, can persist in water at low concentrations and pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems and drinking water quality. The effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in removing OMPs varies due to factors such as low concentrations, stable chemical structures, and suboptimal conditions. This review discusses these factors, focusing on the adaptation of microorganisms to degrade OMPs. Recommendations are made to improve prediction models and optimize microbial treatment strategies for OMP removal.

Respirometry tests in wastewater treatment: Why and how? A critical review

Matia Mainardis et al.

Summary: Respirometry tests are widely used in the field of wastewater treatment to characterize wastewater streams, assess toxic/inhibitory effects on biomass, and calibrate mathematical models. This method allows for the fractionation of chemical oxygen demand (COD), provides information on biomass kinetics and stoichiometry, and is useful for promptly assessing toxic effects in wastewater treatment plants. Respirometry has also been applied to innovative areas such as moving-bed bio-reactors, fungi, and microalgae, showing potential for natural remediation methods.

Carbamazepine removal from low-strength municipal wastewater using a combined UASB-MBR treatment system

M. J. Moya-Llamas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the biological removal of carbamazepine from low-strength municipal wastewater using an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor and a two-stage membrane bioreactor. It found that the highest removal rates were achieved during the anaerobic stage, with the aerobic treatment serving to further improve removal efficiency. The results demonstrate the potential of combined biological systems in removing recalcitrant pharmaceuticals.
