Spatiotemporal variation of ecological carrying capacity in Dongliao River Basin, China

Aoyang Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed an ECC evaluation index system using the DPSIRM framework and a subjective-objective combination method. Geographically weighted regression, redundancy analysis, and multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the ECC and influencing factors in the Dongliao River Basin. The results showed that ECC in the study area was spatially heterogeneous and influenced by factors such as precipitation, temperature, altitude, and slope. This study has important implications for sustainable development and ecological restoration in the DRB and similar areas.

Water-energy-ecosystem nexus modeling using multi-objective, non-linear programming in a regulated river: Exploring tradeoffs among environmental flows, cascaded small hydropower, and inter-basin water diversion projects

Dongqin Yin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the optimal operation and scientific management of a complicated water resources system in a regulated river with cascaded small hydropower plants and inter-basin water diversion projects. The research established a nexus system model that considers water resources utilization, energy production, and riverine environmental conservation as the main objectives, using weighted multi-objective programming. Furthermore, the study estimated environmental flows and assessed the environmental impact on the river, conducted optimizations and analyses for multiple scenarios using historical runoff data, and quantitatively identified sectoral linkages relating to the water-energy-ecosystem nexus.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of climate change and human activities on the LULC, landscape pattern, and vegetation growth in the source region of the Datong River. The results show significant changes in alpine desert and alpine meadow areas, as well as an increase in mining and road areas. The study also reveals the correlation between vegetation growth and temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation.

Spatial relationships among regulating ecosystem services in mountainous regions: Nonlinear and elevation-dependent

Hao-jie Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution and correlation of five regulating ecosystem services (RES) in the Qilian Mountains. The results showed that RES were spatially clustered and their distribution was constrained by hydrothermal conditions. The interactions among RES exhibited nonlinear and synergistic relationships, with some conflicts in certain scenarios. Recommendations for land management and biodiversity conservation were provided based on the findings.

Effectiveness of the Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve of China in Reducing Human Impacts

Shicheng Li et al.

Summary: The management effectiveness of Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve in reducing human footprint was evaluated. The results showed that the management effectiveness was partial, with better results in the north part of the reserve and poorer results at both ends. The reserve was effective in controlling population density and land use, but ineffective in reducing road construction, mining, and construction of hydropower facilities.

Evaluation of Ecological Carrying Capacity and Identification of Its Influencing Factors Based on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System: A Case Study of the Yellow River Basin in Shaanxi

Zhiyuan Zhu et al.

Summary: Ecological carrying capacity (ECC) is an important index for assessing the sustainability of ecosystems. This study used GIS and RS techniques to evaluate the ECC of the Yellow River Basin in Shaanxi and identify the influencing factors. A calculation method combining RS and GIS data was used to estimate the net primary productivity (NPP) of each land type and calculate the ECC of the watershed. The geographical detector model was applied to study the influencing factors of ECC, providing a scientific basis for ecological management policies.

Qingzheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study quantitatively analyzed the spatiotemporal changes in global land use/land cover (LULC) and found that the ecological environment underwent noticeable changes around the year 2000, with the most dramatic changes occurring during 1987-1997. The economy was identified as the main driving force behind LULC changes.

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal pattern of ECC in 286 cities in China from 2008 to 2017 using GTWR model. The results showed that areas with high ECC are mainly concentrated in provincial capital cities, medium-level cities spread from east to west, and low-level areas are gradually improving. Factors such as population density, GDP, unemployment rate, wage, etc., have significant impacts on the spatial pattern of urban ECC.
