Assessment of the water footprint for the European power sector during the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system

Alena Lohrmann et al.

Summary: The transition to 100% renewable energy could help address the water-energy nexus, but certain technologies may strain water ecosystems. By 2050, the water footprint of fossil-fueled power plants in 20 European regions is projected to significantly decrease, though total water demand may rise in some areas under the Area scenario. Countries like Turkey, Norway, and Sweden could face the largest water demands in Europe due to new hydropower plant developments.

Hydroclimatic change challenges the EU planned transition to a carbon neutral electricity system

Angelo Carlino et al.

Summary: The study indicates that under the reference scenario for 2040 aligned with EU climate and energy strategies, there is an increase in generation from fossil fuels, particularly from combined cycle gas turbine plants, to compensate for the reduction in hydro generation due to hydroclimatic scenarios. This reduction, along with shutdown events of thermal plants in the IP region caused by high water temperatures, results in load cuts that undermine the reliability of the electricity system. Furthermore, the increased use of fossil fuels leads to higher generation costs and carbon intensity, jeopardizing emissions reduction targets and slowing down the decarbonization process.

Estimating Regionalized Hydrological Impacts of Climate Change Over Europe by Performance-Based Weighting of CORDEX Projections

Frederiek C. Sperna Weiland et al.

Summary: Ensemble projections of future changes in discharge over Europe show large variation, with different weighting approaches influencing the consistency of the projections. Weighting methods favored projections from the same General Circulation Models, but high weights obtained through past good performance can provide deviating projections for the future. In Central Europe, differences between models become more pronounced, highlighting the need for robust weighting methods to increase the reliability of change signals.

Balanced estimate and uncertainty assessment of European climate change using the large EURO-CORDEX regional climate model ensemble

Guillaume Evin et al.

Summary: This study assesses uncertainty in a large ensemble of 87 EURO-CORDEX climate projections using an advanced statistical method called QUALYPSO. The analysis provides a detailed description of the ensemble, including balanced estimates of mean changes, total uncertainty of projections over time, and key contributors to model uncertainty. The study finds that uncertainty due to RCMs can be as significant as uncertainty due to GCMs, and that unbalanced ensembles can lead to drastic differences in estimated changes compared to standard average estimates.
