Nutrient recovery from municipal solid waste leachate in the scope of circular economy: Recent developments and future perspectives

Mustafa Evren Ersahin et al.

Summary: Considering the current situation of the CSF market, dependency on CSFs in agricultural production poses significant risks to food security, especially for import-dependent countries. The circular economy and resource recovery concepts can reduce this dependency by utilizing waste streams to produce recovery-based fertilizers (RBF). Municipal solid waste leachate (MSWL) has high potential for RBF production due to its rich nitrogen and phosphorus content. Various methods can be used to recover these nutrients from MSWL, such as microalgae cultivation, chemical precipitation, and membrane separation.
