Function of aquatic plants on nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas emission in enhanced denitrification constructed wetlands: Iris pseudacorus for example

Xushun Gu et al.

Summary: Aquatic plants play a crucial role in nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas emission in wetlands, enhancing denitrification and reducing greenhouse gas release. The addition of organics can improve nitrogen removal efficiency in plant wetlands, and plants help maintain the abundance of ammonia oxidation bacteria through oxygen transport.

Unveiling the role of sediments in phosphorus removal in pilot-scale constructed wetlands for swine wastewater treatment

Juan Zhou et al.

Summary: The accumulation rate of phosphorus in sediments is loading rate-dependent, with aluminum-bound phosphorus and iron-bound phosphorus playing a key role in the variability of phosphorus concentration. The increase in phosphorus sorption capacity is attributed to the rise in pH, as well as the concentrations of ammonium oxalate-extractable aluminum and iron in sediments due to wastewater input.

Effects of applying different carbon substrates on nutrient removal and greenhouse gas emissions by constructed wetlands treating carbon-depleted hydroponic wastewater

Tongtong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different carbon substrates on the treatment efficiency of hydroponic wastewater using vertical flow constructed wetlands. The addition of sucrose and common reed litter improved the removal of nitrogen and phosphate, and the common reed litter also reduced the emission of greenhouse gases.

Enhancement of partial denitrification-anammox pathways in constructed wetlands by plant-based external carbon sources

Zhuanzhuan Sun et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using wetland plant-based carbon sources to enhance nitrogen removal in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs). The results showed that cattails had a better carbon release capacity than wheat straw and corn cob. Alkali pretreatment of cattails significantly enhanced the release of volatile fatty acids, leading to a high denitrification rate. The addition of external carbon sources and adjustment of the C/N ratio further improved nitrogen removal efficiency by increasing the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria and anammox bacteria.

Root exudates release from Myriophyllum aquaticum and effects on nitrogen removal by constructed wetlands

Juan Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of root exudates released by macrophytes in nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs). The results showed that Myriophyllum aquaticum released root exudates at a higher rate compared to other plants, and the release rate was influenced by ammonium concentration and harvesting frequency. CWs with plants showed higher ammonium removal efficiencies than those without plants, while there was no significant difference for total nitrogen removal. The microbial community composition in sediments was slightly different between root exudate and no-root exudate treatments. The study suggests that adding high levels of root exudates can enhance nitrogen removal in CWs for carbon-limited wastewater treatment.

Exploring recycled agricultural wastes for high-rate removal of nitrogen in wastewater: Emphasizing on the investigation of the inner driving force and comparison with conventional liquid carbon sources

Qiya Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of recycled agricultural wastes as external solid carbon sources to enhance the removal of nitrogen in wastewater. The experiments showed that the release of dissolved organic carbon varied among different agricultural wastes, and the denitrification performance was influenced by the abundance of functional genes. The findings provide valuable information for understanding the mechanism of using agricultural wastes to promote nitrogen removal in wastewater.

Cold temperature increases nitrate accumulation in pilot-scale surface flow constructed wetlands with high rates of nitrogen removal

Xiang Chen et al.

Summary: High removal rates of nitrogen were achieved in pilot-scale surface flow constructed wetlands treating high-strength ammonium-rich swine wastewater. Nitrate concentration in effluent was higher than influent, but did not significantly affect ammonium removal. Nitrate concentration showed annual cyclical changes and was influenced by water temperature and oxidation reduction potential.

Metagenomic analyses of microbial structure and metabolic pathway in solid-phase denitrification systems for advanced nitrogen removal of wastewater treatment plant effluent: A pilot-scale study

Zhongchen Yang et al.

Summary: The study constructed pilot-scale solid-phase denitrification systems with different carbon sources, analyzed the impact on microbial community structure, functions and metabolic pathways. PHBV-sawdust system outperformed the PHBV system in nitrogen removal efficiency, DOC release and NH4+-N accumulation. Metagenomic analyses revealed significant differences in microbial community structure between systems and the presence of four anaerobic anammox bacteria.
