Acylated homoserine lactones regulate the response of methane metabolism and nitrogen metabolism to florfenicol in anaerobic fermentation

Qin Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) in regulating nitrogen cycling and methane metabolism in anaerobic fermentation. The results show that the addition of AHL enhances the promotion of methane production and nitrogen cycling by florfenicol. The study also indicates that AHL reduces the inhibitory effect of florfenicol on certain functional microbiota and improves the stability of fermentation microbiota.

Soil salinity and its associated effects on soil microorganisms, greenhouse gas emissions, crop yield, biodiversity and desertification: A review

Zied Haj-Amor et al.

Summary: Although significant research has been conducted on the effects of soil salinity issue on agricultural productivity, limited consideration has been given to its critical effects on soil biogeochemistry, land desertification, and biodiversity loss. This article synthesizes information from 238 articles published between 1989 and 2022 and highlights the impact of soil salinity on microbial community composition, soil organic carbon content, greenhouse gas emissions, crop yield, soil biodiversity, and desertification. The study emphasizes the need for innovative mitigation strategies that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and calls for further research to address knowledge gaps and improve understanding of salinity effects.

Soil microbial network complexity predicts ecosystem function along elevation gradients on the Tibetan Plateau

Wenqing Chen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the relationships between soil microbial diversity and network complexity and ecosystem multifunctionality. The findings showed that diversity, network complexity, and ecosystem multifunctionality declined with increasing elevation. Microbial network complexity was a better predictor of ecosystem functions than diversity, and the effects of microbial diversity on multifunctionality were indirectly driven by network complexity.

Ideas and perspectives: Sea-level change, anaerobic methane oxidation, and the glacial-interglacial phosphorus cycle

Bjorn Sundby et al.

Summary: The oceanic phosphorus cycle plays a crucial role in the movement of phosphorus in the ocean. A new two-reservoir scenario for the glacial-interglacial phosphorus cycle has been proposed, which involves the mobilization of sedimentary phosphorus through diagenesis in methane hydrate-bearing sediments. This scenario contributes to the understanding of rapid climate transitions documented in paleo-records.

Carbon sequestration under different organic amendments in saline-alkaline soils

Lipeng Wu et al.

Summary: Organic amendments significantly increased soil organic C stock in saline paddy fields, with biochar treatment showing the highest increase. However, rice straw and organic fertilizer were found to be more effective in improving soil aggregate stability compared to biochar. This research highlights the importance of organic amendments in enhancing soil quality and carbon sequestration in saline-alkaline soils.

Coexistence patterns of soil methanogens are closely tied to methane generation and community assembly in rice paddies

Dong Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the coexistence patterns of soil methanogens are closely linked to their functional significance, with common coexistence potentially contributing more than species diversity to soil functions; furthermore, the assembly pattern of commonly coexisting taxa shows a similar 30% determinism and similar 70% stochasticity, while a higher proportion of stochasticity (93 to 99%) characterizes the assembly of endemically coexisting taxa.
