Distribution of the heavy metals Co, Cu, and Pb in sediments and Typha spp. And Phragmites mauritianus in three Zambian wetlands

Misery Mulele Nabuyanda et al.

Summary: The study revealed variations in the levels of Co, Cu, and Pb in the sediments of wetlands in Zambia. Phragmites mauritianus and Typha spp. demonstrated potential as hyperaccumulators for heavy metals and could be used for phytoremediation of polluted sediments.

Potentially toxic elements contamination in surface sediment and indigenous aquatic macrophytes of the Bahmanshir River, Iran: Appraisal of phytoremediation capability

Hamed Haghnazar et al.

Summary: The study in Bahmanshir River of Iran revealed that sediment contamination was primarily caused by municipal wastewater/vehicular pollution, with contributions from weathering/industrial/agricultural activities. Moderate pollution levels for Pb and Cu were indicated, along with low to moderate contamination and toxicity overall. Typha latifolia L. demonstrated good phytostabilization capability for Cd, Cu, and Pb, and phytoextraction capacity for Zn, making it a potential candidate for bioaccumulation in the study area.

Eco-sustainable passive treatment for mine waters: Full-scale and long-term demonstration

Salud Orden et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the technical and economic performance of a full-scale passive DAS treatment plant operating for 28 months to treat extremely acidic and metal rich mine waters. The efficiency of the system is demonstrated by a significant decrease in the average net acidity and the total elimination of various trace metals. The results show that DAS technology is the most technically and economically sustainable way to decontaminate acid and metal-rich mine waters in abandoned mines.

Importance of the Rhizosphere Microbiota in Iron Biofortification of Plants

Tristan Lurthy et al.

Summary: Increasing iron content in plant products and enhancing iron assimilation is crucial for human nutrition and health, but it poses challenges due to limited availability of iron in cultivated soils. Soil microorganisms show potential in promoting plant iron nutrition, indicating their significant contribution to plant iron uptake and homeostasis. Understanding plant-microbe interactions and utilizing this knowledge in genetic and agronomic approaches may lead to improved plant breeding strategies related to plant iron uptake.

Review of Typha spp. (cattails) as toxicity test species for the risk assessment of environmental contaminants on emergent macrophytes

Verena Sesin et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the potential for developing standard toxicity tests for Typha spp., providing seven selection criteria and identifying knowledge gaps that limit evaluation of these criteria. Typha spp. shows promise as a future standard test species for ecological risk assessments of contaminants to emergent macrophytes.
