Assessment of spike-AMP and qPCR-AMP in soil microbiota quantitative research

Meiling Zhang et al.

Summary: Relative microbiome profiling (RMP) using new sequencing approaches has limited capacity to detect shifts in microbial abundances. Absolute microbiome profiling (AMP) provides more accurate results. The two most popular AMP methods, spike-in method (spike-AMP) and quantitative PCR combined with high-throughput sequencing (qPCR-AMP), were evaluated in soil microbiota research. The spike-AMP method showed inconsistent results and was highly dependent on the amount of spike added, while qPCR-AMP provided valuable insights into the understanding of soil microbial dynamics.

Comammox bacteria predominate among ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms in municipal but not in refinery wastewater treatment plants

Shishi He et al.

Summary: This study analyzed activated sludge samples from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants and found that comammox bacteria were more abundant than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing archaea in municipal plants, while this trend did not hold true for industrial plants. Furthermore, a higher diversity of comammox bacteria was found in municipal samples. This study provides important insights into the abundance and diversity of comammox bacteria in municipal and refinery wastewater treatment systems.

Comammox biogeography subject to anthropogenic interferences along a high-altitude river

Shufeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study used gene-centric metagenomics to investigate the distribution of comammox Nitrospira in high-altitude river systems, and found that urbanization interference may impact their abundance. The research revealed higher activity of benthic comammox in suburban areas compared to urban areas, with antibiotic content potentially restricting comammox niches in nitrifiers.

N2O and NOy production by the comammox bacterium Nitrospira inopinata in comparison with canonical ammonia oxidizers

Ping Han et al.

Summary: Ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms play a major role in global atmospheric nitrogen oxide emissions, with comammox bacteria showing lower NOy production compared to AOB. The lack of enzymatic activities for NH2OH and NO transformations in comammox bacteria may lead to a buildup of NH2OH/NO, potentially contributing to N2O formation through abiotic reactions.

Distinctive Patterns and Controls of Nitrous Oxide Concentrations and Fluxes from Urban Inland Waters

Gongqin Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents direct measurements of N2O concentrations and fluxes in lakes and rivers of Beijing, China, showing higher levels of N2O emissions than previous estimates for global rivers. The N2O emission factor in Beijing waters is lower compared to global medians, but the N2O yield is higher. Bacteria play a key role in controlling N2O emissions, with a positive relationship observed between N2O and denitrifying bacteria in Beijing waters.

Nitrogen retention effect of riparian zones in agricultural areas: A meta-analysis

Chunjian Lyu et al.

Summary: The study systematically reviewed 123 studies on nitrogen removal in riparian zones published between 1980 and 2020. It found that nitrogen reduction showed an exponential decay trend in surface runoff and groundwater, with higher reduction rates at buffer widths of 10-15 meters. Forests had higher nitrogen uptake, denitrification, and N2O emissions efficiency compared to grasslands, and warm weather was beneficial for denitrification and N2O emissions.
