Hidden risks of deforestation in global supply chains: A study of natural rubber flows from Sri Lanka to the United States

Summary: Growing global demand for natural rubber is driving deforestation in Sri Lanka, with adverse impacts on biodiversity, carbon storage, and local communities. This paper examines the hidden deforestation risks in the supply chains of rubber traded from Sri Lanka to the U.S, highlighting the role of rubber traders and multinational tire manufacturers in hindering traceability. Lack of supply chain transparency compromises the effectiveness of sustainable procurement policies of transnational corporations, such as Loadstar (Michelin) and Nike.

Summary: New digital tools have facilitated the monitoring of forest and land cover changes, allowing civil society actors to hold companies accountable for deforestation. As a response, companies in deforestation-linked global value chains have started using these technologies themselves. The effects of monitoring technologies on these value chains depend on their accessibility, with proprietary technologies benefiting large-scale operations and open technologies supporting democratization. Treating forest and value chain information as a public good can promote inclusive, equitable, and sustainable value chains.

The role of third-party audits in ensuring producer compliance with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification system
