Microplastics in Landfill Leachate: A Comprehensive Review on Characteristics, Detection, and Their Fates during Advanced Oxidation Processes

Lan Wang et al.

Summary: The article summarizes the investigation of microplastics in leachate in 9 countries from 28 papers and provides a comprehensive review of the sampling, detection, and separation methods. There are more than forty types of microplastics in leachate with diverse shapes, wide size distribution, and concentrations of 0-25 items/L. Commonly used techniques for characterization include FTIR, Raman, SEM, and py-GC-MS, but standardization of micro- or nanoplastics for leachate with a complex composition should be further studied. The review also discusses the degradation mechanism of microplastics in advanced oxidation processes and suggests potential implementation in leachate treatment plants.

Discovering dominant ammonia assimilation: Implication for high-strength nitrogen removal in full scale biological treatment of landfill leachate

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: Landfill leachate from domestic waste contains high-strength nitrogen. The combination of anoxic and aerobic process (AO) based on nitrification and denitrification is commonly used for biological nitrogen removal (BNR). However, the presence of high-strength organics and the reflux of aerobic effluent may affect the performance of the AO process. By studying the nitrogen balance in a landfill leachate treatment plant, it was found that the primary anoxic and aerobic stages were responsible for approximately 90% removal of total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia (NH4+-N). The dominance of ammonia assimilation in the BNR mechanism of landfill leachate in AO was identified, providing valuable insights for optimizing engineering design and operation.

Advanced treatment of landfill leachate through combined Anammox-based biotreatment, O3/H2O2 oxidation, and activated carbon adsorption: technical performance, surrogate-based control strategy, and operational cost analysis

Yongyuan Yang et al.

Summary: The complexity and dynamic characteristics of landfill leachate pose challenges for its treatment. A combined treatment process, including a one-stage partial nitrification-Anammox process, an O-3/H2O2 process, and a granular activated carbon filtration (GAC) process, was investigated. A surrogate-based ozone dose control strategy for the O-3/H2O2 process was evaluated. Results showed that this three-stage process achieved high removal rates of total nitrogen, COD, and micropollutants, satisfying discharge requirements. Real-time control of ozone dosing for COD removal was achieved through monitoring UVA(254) reduction. Cost analysis indicated that the combination of O-3/H2O2 and GAC as the main steps was more cost-effective in post-treatment. A dynamic operation strategy in response to leachate changes was recommended.

The system demonstrates high efficiency in COD, color, turbidity, and TOC removal, reaching maximum removal rates of 62%, 66%, 53%, and 55% respectively after 4 hours of irradiation under optimal conditions. The durability of the vanes is also tested and found to be capable of at least six consecutive cycles without significant decrease in treatment efficiency. In comparison to pure TiO2, the synthesized Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles exhibit higher removal rates within equivalent time intervals, making the entire system a promising post-treatment approach.
