Enhanced short-chain fatty acids production through a short-term anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge: Synergistic pretreatment of alkali and alkaline hydrolase blend

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of alkaline hydrolase blend (AHB) incubation at initial pH 10.0 condition for enhancing anaerobic fermentation in waste activated sludge management. The results show that this method significantly increased the release of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and promoted the hydrolysis and biodegradation of dissolved organic matters. The AHB-based strategy proves to be a cost-effective and carbon-beneficial technology for sludge management.

Combined thermal hydrolysis pretreatment and anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and food waste

Amr Ismail et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) on the mono- and co-digestion of thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) and food waste (FW). The results show that THP enhances solubilization and reduces particle size, resulting in improved anaerobic biodegradability. Co-digestion of the two feedstocks improves methane yields and kinetics, with the contribution of FW playing a significant role.

Impact of thermal pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of dewatered sludge from municipal and industrial wastewaters and its economic feasibility

Gi-Beom Kim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of thermal pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of dewatered sludge. The results showed that thermal pretreatment at 140 degrees C for 3 h achieved the highest biomethane yield. The study also found that thermal pretreatment promoted the growth of hydrolytic bacteria and enhanced the interspecies transfer of H-2 and electrons. The most economical pretreatment condition was determined to be 60 degrees C for 3 h.

Insights on the microbial communities developed during the anaerobic fermentation of raw and pretreated microalgae biomass

Mercedes Llamas et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids are important building blocks for bioproducts production, and their bioconversion efficiency can be enhanced by thermal and enzymatic pretreatments on microalgae biomass. Proteins were found to be the limiting factor in the conversion of raw biomass into SCFAs. The microbial community dynamics and distribution were strongly influenced by the pretreatment methods, affecting SCFAs bioconversion yields.

Response of VFAs and microbial interspecific interaction to primary sludge fermentation temperature

Xiao Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that temperature plays a crucial role in the succession and interspecific interaction of microorganisms in primary sludge anaerobic fermentation system, affecting the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Higher temperatures promote the production of acetic and iso-valeric acid, and there are metabolic differences among microorganisms at different temperatures.

Improving methane production from algal sludge anaerobic fermentation by peroxydisulfate (PDS) pretreatment

Kang Song et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential of improving methane production from algal sludge anaerobic digestion by peroxydisulfate (PDS) pretreatment. Results showed that PDS dosage at 0.02 g PDS/g algal sludge TSS led to the highest accumulative methane production after 60 days fermentation. The addition of PDS inhibited microbial activities but improved short chain fatty acids production.
