Analysis of the influence of mobile phones' material composition on the economic profitability of their manual dismantling

Martina Bruno et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic characterization of 100 waste mobile phones and investigates the profitability of manual dismantling and sale of separated components and materials. The results show that the average lifetime of smartphones is shorter than feature phones, and the main component of waste mobile phones is plastic. However, the market prices for potentially recoverable materials and components are not enough to cover the costs of manual dismantling according to European standard labor costs.

A critical review of the pre-processing and metals recovery methods from e-wastes

Rima Kumari et al.

Summary: This study critically reviews the recycling and recovery of e-wastes, which are potential sources of valuable metals, under the concept of urban mining and circular economy. The technological details of different metal recycling processes, pre-treatment methods, and advancements in these techniques are discussed. The evaluation of metal recovery techniques based on life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and industrial-scale studies suggests that integrated metal recovery techniques outperform single recovery techniques in terms of recovery efficiency and environmental performance. Scaling up of biometallurgical, electro-chemical, and super critical fluid extraction methods is recommended due to their superior environmental performances.

Material composition and associated toxicological impact assessment of mobile phones

Nipoon Gupta et al.

Summary: The study reveals that technological advancement, rather than regulations, has a significant impact on the metal content and toxicological impacts of end-of-life mobile phones. Metal content in LCDs has tripled from basic phones (2000-2004) to smartphones (2011-2016). Some end-of-life mobile phones were found to have hazard potential due to high concentrations of Pb in TCLP leachates. Cr, Pb, and Cu were identified as posing the most significant human carcinogenic, non-carcinogenic, and ecotoxicity risks, respectively.
