Thin Polymer Films by Oxidative or Reductive Electropolymerization and Their Application in Electrochromic Windows and Thin-Film Sensors

Ibeth Rendon-Enriquez et al.

Summary: Electrically conducting and semiconducting polymers are still very attractive due to their unique optical and electronic properties and their broad device application potential. Their synthesis and structure elucidation are still intensely investigated for several high future relevance applications. This article demonstrates the fruitful interplay of current electropolymerization research and its exploitation for science education, using the synthesis of conducting polymers and their assembly into functional devices as a teaching tool.

Influence of Polyfluorinated Side Chains and Soft-Template Method on the Surface Morphologies and Hydrophobic Properties of Electrodeposited Films from Fluorene Bridged Dicarbazole Monomers

David Possetto et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the relationship between the monomer molecular structure and the capability of tuning the morphology of electrodeposited gas bubbles template polymer thin films. By adjusting electrochemical parameters, the nanostructural properties of the soft-templated films can be fine-tuned, resulting in superhydrophobic surfaces.

Soft-template electropolymerization of 3,4-(2,3-naphtylenedioxy) thiophene-2-acetic acid esters favoring dimers: Controlling the surface nanostructure by side ester groups

Caroline Fradin et al.

Summary: A series of NaphDOT-R derivatives were synthesized and their films with different surface morphology were deposited on electrode surface through anodic oxidation and electropolymerization. The structure of the ester fragment and deposition conditions have effects on the surface roughness and wettability of the films.

Micellar formation by soft template electropolymerization in organic solvents

Caroline Fradin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method of soft templating using self-assembly of conducting monomers in organic solvents to form porous nanotubular structures. Results show that NaphDOT is capable of forming vertically aligned nanotubes, and the size of micelles in the polymerization solution correlates with the inner diameter of the nanotubes formed.

Electropolymerization of [2 x 2] grid-type cobalt(II) complex with thiophene substituted dihydrazone ligand

Sergiusz Napierala et al.

Summary: A grid-type complex containing dihydrazone ligand with thiophene rings was prepared by oxidative electropolymerization onto ITO electrode to form a purple thin film. The morphology of the polymer film was analyzed by SEM and AFM imaging, showing that the film obtained by electropolymerization method is homogeneous and uniform. The thin film exhibits color transition from purple to blue due to the stepwise reduction of poly-[Co-4(II)(L1-2H)(4)] into poly-[(Co2Co2I)-Co-II(L1-2H)(4)](2-) and poly-[Co-4(I)(L1-2H)(4)](4-). Its electrochromic properties such as long-term stability, coloration efficiency, and switching times have been investigated.

Densely packed open microspheres by soft template electropolymerization of b enzotrithiophene-based monomers

Yanis Levieux-Souid et al.

Summary: A soft electropolymerization approach was used to prepare highly ordered porous surface structures with benzotrithiophene-based monomers, leading to unique results with aromatic groups forming densely packed large open spheres. The porous surfaces hold potential for various applications such as water-harvesting systems, oil adsorbents, sensors, and drug delivery in the future.

Electrochemical sensor based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes for imidacloprid determination

Evellin E. S. Bruzaca et al.

Summary: A simple and robust sensor was developed for the determination of the widely used neonicotinoid imidacloprid (IMI) using a glassy carbon electrode modified with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNT) and Nafion (R). The sensor showed good sensitivity and selectivity for IMI detection in complex samples.
