Synergistic coupling of NiCoS nanorods with NiCo-LDH nanosheets towards highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media

Guanyun Gao et al.

Summary: Through strong coupling between NiCo-LDH nanosheets and NiCoS nanorods, a three-dimensional heterogeneous structure is formed, providing a large catalytic specific surface area. The modification of LDH lamellar enhances its structural stability and provides abundant edge active sites. The synergistic effect of NiCo-LDH and NiCoS optimizes the electronic structure and promotes mass transfer and water cracking. The resulting NiCoS@NiCo-LDH/NF exhibits a significantly enhanced HER process, requiring only 99 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA& BULL;cm-2 and maintaining excellent durability for 24 hours, making it a cost-free, high-efficient, and stable HER catalyst in basic solution.

Anisotropic Strain Boosted Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Activity of F-NiCoMo LDH for Overall Water Splitting

Zibo Zhai et al.

Summary: This study successfully designed and synthesized a highly efficient F-doped NiCoMo layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst through in situ growing on nickel foam (F-NiCoMo LDH/NF) for overall water splitting. DFT calculations demonstrated that the introduction of Mo and F atoms induced the generation of anisotropic lattice strain, resulting in the generation of high-energy active interface and shifting the d-band centers. As a result, the F-NiCoMo LDH/NF catalyst electrode exhibited low overpotential (107.5 mV at 10 mA cm(-2)) and a small Tafel slope (67.2 mV dec(-1)) for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The assembled electrolyzer using this catalyst electrode required only 1.83 V to deliver 300 mA cm(-2) and operated stably for 100 h.

Non-noble Metal Electrocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Water Electrolysis

Huimin Wu et al.

Summary: Water electrolysis is a sustainable method for hydrogen production using clean energy sources, but the slow kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) result in low efficiency of electrolysis devices. Current electrocatalysts, which use noble metals like platinum for catalyzing HER and OER, face limitations due to their abundance and high cost. Therefore, the focus has shifted towards developing high-performance and cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalysts as an alternative.
