Electrochemical detection of fluoride ions in water with nanoporous gold modified by a boronic acid terminated self-assembled monolayer

Lara Marie Novak et al.

Summary: Nanoporous gold (npAu) is a suitable platform for electrochemical detection of chemical species due to its high surface-to-volume ratio. By modifying the surface with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA), an electrode sensitive to fluoride ions in water was created, with potential for mobile sensing applications. The detection strategy is based on changes in the boronic acid functional groups induced by fluoride binding, allowing for fast and sensitive detection with a 0.2 mM detection limit.
