Effects of Long-term Metformin and Lifestyle Interventions on Cardiovascular Events in the Diabetes Prevention Program and Its Outcome Study

Ronald B. Goldberg et al.

Summary: The study found that neither lifestyle intervention nor metformin reduced the incidence of major cardiovascular events over a 21-year period, despite their long-term diabetes prevention effects. It is possible that the provision of group lifestyle intervention to all participants, extensive use of statin and antihypertensive agents outside the study, and a decrease in the use of study metformin over time may have diluted the effects of these interventions.

Risk Factors for the Development of Retinopathy in Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes: The Diabetes Prevention Program Experience

Neil H. White et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the risk factors, both glycemic and nonglycemic, that contribute to the presence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) before and after the onset of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The results showed that DR may occur in prediabetes and early stages of T2D, and that HbA1c is an important risk factor for the development of DR across the entire glycemic range.

Attenuated Risk Association of End-Stage Kidney Disease with Metformin in Type 2 Diabetes with eGFR Categories 1-4

Aimin Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that the use of metformin can reduce the risk of end-stage kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes, while possibly lowering the risk of cardiovascular events and overall mortality. Proper dosage and monitoring of kidney function are crucial for patients using metformin.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of metformin and lifestyle intervention on mortality rates in high-risk individuals. Results showed that neither strategy reduced all-cause, cancer, or cardiovascular mortality rates among the participants.
