Fluorescence spectroscopy shows porphyrins produced by cultured oral bacteria differ depending on composition of growth media

Aine M. Lennon et al.

Summary: Red fluorophores produced by oral bacteria play a significant role in fluorescence-based diagnosis and treatment, acting as markers for bacterially infected tissue, mature plaque, or calculus. This study investigated and compared the fluorescence spectra produced by different cultured oral bacteria when grown on agars with various nutrients, and correlated them with known porphyrins.
