Cull cow carcass traits and risk of culling of Holstein cows and 3-breed rotational crossbred cows from Viking Red, Montbeliarde, and Holstein bulls

M. Piazza et al.

Summary: This observational study compared the carcass attributes of culled cows from three-breed crossbreeding with Holstein purebred cows and found that crossbred cows had a higher overall value, better fleshiness, and higher price.

Associations between ultrasound hepatic measurements, body measures, and milk production traits in Holstein cows

M. Piazza et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between ultrasound imaging-derived traits and body size measurements and milk productivity indicators in dairy cows. The study found that ultrasound-related traits were associated with body size measurements and body condition score, but not with milk production traits. Additionally, healthy cows were able to counteract the metabolic stress of the lactation period without straining liver functionality. Ultrasound imaging was proven to be a promising technique for assessing liver metabolic conditions.

Comparison of 3-breed rotational crossbreds of Montb?liarde, Viking Red, and Holstein with Holstein cows fed 2 alternative diets for dry matter intake, production, and residual feed intake

G. M. Pereira et al.

Summary: This study compared the differences in dry matter intake, milk production, body weight, body condition score, and feed efficiency between CB cows and HO cows fed with different diets. When CB cows were fed with the HFLS diet, compared to HO cows fed with the TRAD diet, the dry matter intake and body weight decreased, while milk production, fat plus protein production, and feed efficiency showed no significant differences. In terms of residual feed intake, CB cows fed with the HFLS diet had lower and more desirable values compared to HO cows fed with the TRAD diet.

Herd life, lifetime production, and profitability of Viking Red-sired and Montbeliarde-sired crossbred cows compared with their Holstein herdmates

A. R. Hazel et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance, longevity, and profitability of a 3-breed rotational crossbreeding system involving Viking Red, Montbeliarde, and Holstein breeds with pure Holstein herdmates in high-performance commercial herds in Minnesota. Results showed that the 3-breed crossbreds had longer herd life and higher profitability compared to their Holstein herdmates.

Analysis of milk solids production and mid-lactation bodyweight to evaluate cow production efficiency on commercial dairy farms

S. H. Evers et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of factors such as animal breed, Irish total merit index, and parity on milk production efficiency using a large dataset of commercial dairy cows. Results showed that crossbred cows performed better in mid-lactation bodyweight production and net energy requirement, contributing to increased production efficiency in intensive grazing systems.

Dairy crossbreeding challenges the French dairy cattle sociotechnical regime

Marie-Angelina Magne et al.

Summary: Rotational crossbreeding, while potentially more effective than pure breeding in improving dairy cattle systems, remains rare in France due to the prevailing sociotechnical regime centered on pure-breeding and high-specialization paradigms in herd management. Despite recognized benefits for farm sustainability, the lack of technical references and presence of various barriers hinder widespread adoption of dairy crossbreeding practices.

Review: Genetic selection of high-yielding dairy cattle toward sustainable farming systems in a rapidly changing world

L. F. Brito et al.

Summary: The significant increase in food production due to genetic selection and farming advancements, such as in the dairy cattle industry, has led to a doubling of milk production while reducing the overall cow population. However, drawbacks include decreased genetic diversity and negative genetic responses for traits related to fertility, health, and longevity due to intensive milk yield selection. Efforts are needed to refine selection indexes to prioritize traits related to animal welfare, health, and environmental efficiency.

Contribution of genetic variability to phenotypic differences in on-farm efficiency metrics of dairy cows based on body weight and milk solids yield

D. P. Berry et al.

Summary: The study using a large dataset of commercial Irish dairy cows revealed genetic correlations between milk solids per kilogram of body weight and other traits, indicating potential for reverse selection. With low genetic correlations, there is opportunity to improve milk solids independently of body weight, but consideration of body condition score is necessary.
