Myostatin Knockout Regulates Bile Acid Metabolism by Promoting Bile Acid Synthesis in Cattle

Di Wu et al.

Summary: MSTN knockout regulates liver metabolism and promotes bile acid metabolism. This is achieved through enhanced bile acid synthesis, which in turn increases lean muscle mass.

Temporal profiles describing markers of inflammation and metabolism during the transition period of pasture-based, seasonal-calving dairy cows

O. K. Spaans et al.

Summary: The physiology of transition cows from pregnancy to lactation is complex and has significant implications for disease, economic losses, and animal welfare. Most studies have focused on cows fed total mixed rations, while research on grazing cows is limited. This study compiled a database of 2,610 lactations from pasture-based dairy cows in New Zealand to examine the profiles of blood analytes and physiological indicators during the transition period. The results showed that moderate-yielding cows undergo similar changes to high-yielding cows during transition, but differences in diet composition lead to higher concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) than expected.

Vitamin D in dairy cows: metabolism, status and functions in the immune system

Klaus Eder et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the effects of vitamin D or its metabolites on the immune system in dairy cows. It discusses the metabolism of vitamin D, the role of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in plasma as an indicator of vitamin D status, and the classical and non-classical functions of vitamin D. It also highlights the potential role of vitamin D in enhancing immune function and preventing mastitis in dairy cows, but emphasizes the need for further research in this area.

Comparison of the transcriptome in circulating leukocytes in early lactation between primiparous and multiparous cows provides evidence for age-related changes

Laura Buggiotti et al.

Summary: The study identified genes and pathways associated with lactation number in cows that are comparable to those related to aging in humans and model organisms. Changes in energy utilization and immune responses were also detected in leukocytes from older cows.

Relationships between metabolic profiles and gene expression in liver and leukocytes of dairy cows in early lactation

D. C. Wathes et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the global transcriptomic profiles of liver and circulating leukocytes from dairy cows in different metabolic clusters, revealing gene expression differences related to metabolic and immune functions in imbalanced cows. The findings suggest that imbalanced cows have dysregulated hepatic lipid metabolism and reduced capacity for cell division, increasing their susceptibility to infectious diseases.

Hepatic transcriptomic adaptation from prepartum to postpartum in dairy cows

S. T. Gao et al.

Summary: The transcriptomic analysis of liver in dairy cows transitioning from pregnancy to lactation revealed activation of metabolism, particularly lipid, glucose, and amino acid metabolism, with key roles of PPAR and adipocytokines signaling pathways. Despite an induction of gluconeogenesis, there was a decrease in expression of glucose transporters and inhibition of xenobiotic metabolism, likely due to inflammatory conditions. Coordination among genes related to protein synthesis, energy, lipid metabolism, and cell proliferation was observed.

Mitochondria: A critical hub for hepatic stellate cells activation during chronic liver diseases

Devaraj Ezhilarasan

Summary: Research suggests that mitochondria play a crucial role in the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) during liver injury, with activated HSCs exhibiting increased metabolic activity, glycolysis, and gene expressions related to extracellular matrix (ECM) production. Targeting mitochondrial function may be a potential strategy to control or prevent HSCs activation and hepatic fibrosis progression.

Aspects of transition cow metabolomics-Part II: Histomorphologic changes in the liver parenchyma throughout the transition period, in cows with different liver metabotypes and effects of a metaphylactic butaphosphan and cyanocobalamin treatment

F. Pietsch et al.

Summary: During the transition period, dairy cows exhibit fat accumulation and glycogen depletion in the liver, along with histologic signs of hepatitis and hepatocyte degeneration. These changes are more pronounced in animals with little alterations in their liver metabolome profile, suggesting a potential link to decreased grass silage quality.

Global transcriptomic profiles of circulating leucocytes in early lactation cows with clinical or subclinical mastitis

Zhangrui Cheng et al.

Summary: This study compared the transcriptomic profiles in circulating leukocytes between healthy cows and those with naturally occurring subclinical or clinical mastitis, revealing more intensive changes attributed to clinical mastitis. Most of the differentially expressed genes were associated with cell killing and immune processes. Notably, many upregulated genes encoding antimicrobial peptides in clinical mastitis were not upregulated in subclinical mastitis, suggesting a key role in combating disease organisms.

When Two plus Two Is More than Four: Evidence for a Synergistic Effect of Fatty Acids on Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Activity in a Bovine Hepatic Model

Sebastiano Busato et al.

Summary: The inclusion of fat in livestock diets is a valuable and cost-effective way to increase animal caloric intake. Fatty acids can modulate the ligand-dependent nuclear PPAR, regulating important metabolic processes in animals. Some mixtures of fatty acids display a synergistic effect, leading to PPAR activation greater than the sum of their parts, which is crucial for developing tailored dietary plans for nutrigenomic purposes.
