Invited review: Muscle protein breakdown and its assessment in periparturient dairy cows

H. Sadri et al.

Summary: Mobilization of body reserves is necessary for high-yielding dairy cows during the periparturient period. However, the role of skeletal muscle in this process has not been extensively studied. Understanding the regulation and assessment of muscle protein breakdown is important for determining the timing and extent of tissue mobilization in dairy cows.

Association of Body Condition Score with Ultrasound Measurements of Backfat and Longissimus Dorsi Muscle Thickness in Periparturient Holstein Cows

Nektarios Siachos et al.

Summary: The study found that repeated body condition scoring can predict the metabolic state of subcutaneous fat, while repeated ultrasound measurements can assess the metabolic state of muscle tissue. There is an association between backfat and longissimus dorsi muscle thickness with body condition scoring during the periparturient period of dairy cows, with significant overlap in reference intervals for BFT and LDT per BCS estimate.

Clinical disease incidence during early lactation, risk factors and association with fertility and culling in grazing dairy cows in Uruguay

Irene Cruz et al.

Summary: This study in commercial grazing dairy herds in Uruguay found a high incidence of diseases in early lactation, with parity and herd size being risk factors. Parity influenced stillbirth and twin births, while large herds had higher rates of clinical mastitis and lameness. Retained placenta-metritis was associated with stillbirth and twin birth, impacting fertility and culling rates.
