Evaluation of the condition of a Mamluk-illuminated paper manuscript at Al-Azhar Library, Egypt

Gomaa Abdel-Maksoud et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of analytical methods used for the condition assessment and identification of components in an important Mamluk-illuminated paper manuscript. The results revealed that the manuscript had different aspects of deterioration, such as dirt, staining, cracks, and detachment. Elemental analysis showed the presence of red lead, azurite, and a brass alloy with a small amount of gold. The study highlights the importance of conservation measures for this manuscript.

A green and sustainable strategy for leather manufacturing: Endow dehydrated hide with consistent and durable hydrophobicity

Shuangfeng Xu et al.

Summary: A green and sustainable approach for leather-making was explored by treating dehydrated hide (DL) with silane coupling agent (TMS) to achieve hydrophobicity. By controlling the hydrolysis and condensation rates of TMS, the DL can be efficiently penetrated and reacted with TMS to obtain hydrophobic leather (HL-TMS). The HL-TMS exhibited excellent water resistance, durability against pH, UV, friction, and organic solvents, as well as improved physical strength and softness compared to chrome-tanned leather.

Evaluation of the efficiency of nanoparticles for increasing α-amylase enzyme activity for removing starch stain from paper artifacts

Mahmoud Abdel-Nasser et al.

Summary: Starch stain is a common issue in paper artifacts, causing deformation and microbial deterioration. This study utilized nanoparticles and an alpha-amylase enzyme to remove starch stains from paper surfaces. The addition of silver nanoparticles increased the enzyme's activity by 160%, while gold nanoparticles enhanced it by 140%.

Fungal Biodeterioration of a Historical Manuscript Dating Back to the 14th Century: An Insight into Various Fungal Strains and Their Enzymatic Activities

Gomaa Abdel-Maksoud et al.

Summary: This study assesses the deterioration of a 14th-century historical manuscript in the Library of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo, Egypt. The research focuses on exploring the role of various fungal strains in the biodeterioration of the manuscript through their secretion of hydrolytic enzymes. Different techniques are used to evaluate the deterioration, and the fungal strains associated with the manuscript are isolated, identified, and assessed for their degradation activities. The findings show that the manuscript exhibits signs of deterioration including color change, brittleness, erosion, and removal of the surface pattern. The identified fungal strains produce hydrolytic enzymes, such as cellulase, amylase, gelatinase, and pectinase, which play a key role in biodegradation.

Wettability after Artificial and Natural Weathering of Polyethylene Terephthalate

Annegret Benke et al.

Summary: The weathering of plastics, especially in aquatic environments, leads to changes in surface properties, particularly wettability. Contact angle measurement is a fast and convenient method to quantify wettability and assess the weathering state of plastics. This study used PET samples to analyze the changes in wetting during artificial and natural weathering. The results showed that wettability with water increased in all cases, with different reasons depending on the weathering method.

Effect of nanoadditives on the novel leather fiber/recycled poly(ethylene-vinyl-acetate) polymer composites for multifunctional applications: Fabrication, characterizations, and multiobjective optimization using central composite design

Shubham Sharma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of using leather buffing dust and nanofillers in recycled poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) composites. The physicomechanical characteristics of the composites are improved by optimizing the hot-press molding process parameters. The results show that these novel composites have great potential for applications in footwear, structural, floor-covering, and transportation domains.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles, characterization, and use for sustainable preservation of historical parchment against microbial biodegradation

Nagah S. Saada et al.

Summary: Green chemistry is a suitable approach for sustainable preparation of nanoparticles, as demonstrated by the use of tea tree leaves extract to prepare silver nanoparticles in this study. The Ag-NPs showed microbiostatic effects against tested microbes and did not significantly affect the chemical and mechanical characteristics of disinfected parchment.
