Temporal moments of one-dimensional advective-dispersive transport with exchange represented via memory function models: Application to river corridor transport

Mohammad Aghababaei et al.

Summary: In this study, closed-form expressions of temporal moments for solute breakthrough curves (BTCs) in river corridors with memory function forms were derived using the phase exposure-dependent exchange (PhEDEx) method. The capability of the memory function form to accommodate specific scaling of river tracer temporal moments reported in the literature was investigated, and the method was applied to identify parameters in two recent tracer tests. A numerical solution to the memory function river corridor transport model was calibrated and validated using measured temporal moments of the tracer test BTCs.

Nitrate reduction potential of a fractured Middle Triassic carbonate aquifer in Southwest Germany

Karsten Osenbrueck et al.

Summary: Nitrate reduction is an important natural mechanism in fractured aquifers, where the porosity of rock matrix and hydraulic conductivity influence the nitrate reduction potential within the aquifer. The study in SW Germany reveals that high-porosity facies and hydraulically active fractures with pyrite or saddle dolomite precipitates are the zones with the highest nitrate reduction potential.

A Dual Heterogeneous Domain Model for Upscaling Anomalous Transport With Multi-Peaks in Heterogeneous Aquifers

Maosheng Yin et al.

Summary: Natural aquifers with multiscale heterogeneity and complex flow networks pose challenges for the reliable simulation and prediction of contaminant transport. To address this issue, a dual heterogeneous domain model (DHDM) was proposed to quantify solute transport. The DHDM can accurately capture multiple peaks and transient tailing behaviors in solute breakthrough curves (BTCs), and it has been validated in different aquifer settings.

Numerical model of the behavior of chlorinated ethenes in a fractured, karstic limestone aquifer

Nicola Pastore et al.

Summary: Developed methodology considers reactive transport and reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents in fractured aquifers in a Lagrangian framework, simulating particle motion affected by first-order reactions. Applied to a groundwater contamination case study in Italy, the model provides estimates on transport and degradation processes, serving as a valuable tool in deciding the role of natural attenuation as a treatment option.

Modeling of groundwater flow and transport in coastal karst aquifers

Neven Kresic et al.

Summary: Numerical modeling of karst water systems is a challenge due to vastly different flow regimes in the solution channels and the porous medium, but recent developments with unstructured grid models, such as MODFLOW-USG, have enabled robust simulation by providing various optional turbulent flow formulations, solute transport capability, and density-dependent flow simulation options. These enhancements eliminate the need for surrogate modeling approaches in karst, offering solutions to common problems faced by groundwater professionals in coastal karst areas.
