Verifiability of the Data-Driven Variational Multiscale Reduced Order Model

Birgul Koc et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the mathematical foundations of reduced order model (ROM) closures. The concept of verifiability is extended from large eddy simulation to the ROM setting. It is proven that the data-driven ROM closure studied here is verifiable. The verifiability of the data-driven ROM closure is investigated in the numerical simulation of the one-dimensional Burgers equation and a two-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder.

Data-driven variational multiscale reduced order models

Changhong Mou et al.

Summary: A new data-driven reduced order model (ROM) framework is proposed in this study, which is based on the hierarchical structure of the variational multiscale (VMS) methodology and utilizes data to enhance ROM accuracy. By separating scales, identifying closure terms, and modeling them with available data, the new framework shows significantly higher accuracy compared to standard ROMs.

Data-driven model reduction, Wiener projections, and the Koopman-Mori-Zwanzig formalism

Summary: Model reduction methods aim to describe complex dynamic phenomena using only relevant dynamical variables, decreasing computational cost, and potentially highlighting key dynamical mechanisms. Recent research has found data-driven model reduction methods to be effective for representing non-Markovian dynamics, but their scope and dynamical underpinning remain incompletely understood.

On closures for reduced order models-A spectrum of first-principle to machine-learned avenues

Shady E. Ahmed et al.

Summary: Reduced order models (ROMs) have been a fundamental discipline of theoretical fluid mechanics for over a century, evolving from early mathematical models and Galerkin models to the innovative data-driven modeling approach. The impact of data-driven modeling, artificial intelligence, and machine learning has significantly changed the standard ROM methodology over the last two decades. The development of ROM closures, which aim to model the effect of discarded ROM modes in under-resolved simulations, demonstrates the ongoing reshaping of the field of reduced order modeling through state-of-the-art data-driven modeling techniques.
