Functionalised penetrating peptide-chondroitin sulphate-gold nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, and applications as an anti-Alzheimer's disease drug

Yangjun Feng et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to develop a transmembrane peptide-chondroitin sulphate-gold nanoparticle (TAT-CS@Au) delivery system for an anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug. TAT-CS@Au demonstrated excellent cellular uptake, inhibited A beta 1-40 accumulation, reduced oxidative stress damage and aberrant tau phosphorylation, and suppressed the expression of inflammatory factors. These findings suggest that TAT-CS@Au could be a promising multi-target anti-AD drug with good cell permeability.

Pillar[5]arene based glyco-targeting nitric oxide nanogenerator for hyperthermia-induced triple-mode cancer therapy

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a thermal-responsive glycol-targeting nitric oxide nanogenerator was constructed by covalently conjugating thermal-responsive nitrosothiols on the surface of mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods, then coating it with a supramolecular complex, and finally loading an alkyl radical initiator. The nanogenerator showed specific targeting ability to HepG2 cells and generated hyperthermia under near infrared irradiation, resulting in photothermal therapy as well as gas therapy and alkyl radical therapy. In vitro experiments demonstrated its biocompatibility and effective inhibition of HepG2 cell proliferation.

Organoselenium compounds as functionalizing agents for gold nanoparticles in cancer therapy

Sara Lorenzoni et al.

Summary: In this study, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with organoselenium compounds were synthesized through two different approaches. The optical and structural properties of both the free compounds and AuNPs-based systems were characterized, and the cytotoxicity of these systems against cancer cell lines was evaluated. The results showed that direct functionalization of AuNPs led to non-cytotoxic systems, while immobilization on AuNPs improved the cytotoxicity of the compounds. Among the systems tested, AuNPs-3MPS-1 exhibited the most selective anticancer response.

Zonal Intratumoral Delivery of Nanoparticles Guided by Surface Functionalization

Rossana Terracciano et al.

Summary: In this study, control over the penetration and spatial distribution of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) across solid tumors was demonstrated by administering GNPs with different surface chemistries at a constant injection rate. Different accumulation patterns of intratumorally injected nanoparticles were discovered dependent on surface functionalization. Modeling their intratumoral transport with reaction-diffusion equations suggested that GNP surface passivation affects nanoparticle reactivity with the tumor microenvironment, leading to differential transport behavior across tumor zones.
