Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Symmetry on Evaporation Triggered Elastocapillary Top-Gathering of High Aspect Ratio Micropillars

Farshad Barghi Golezani et al.

Summary: High-aspect-ratio (HAR) micropillar arrays have various applications due to their large surface area and excellent mechanical compliance. However, they are prone to lateral deflection by elastocapillary forces in liquid environments, limiting their manufacturing processes and applications. This study numerically investigated the impact of symmetry on evaporation triggered top-gathering of micropillars, and suggested a new equation for calculating micropillar deflection due to elastocapillary forces. The study also explored the effect of droplet evaporation on micropillar deflection/top-gathering.

Summary: Superhydrophobic surfaces with low adhesion have been widely studied due to their extensive applications. Inspired by rice leaves, a micro/nanobinary structured superhydrophobic surface was fabricated on a Ti6Al4V substrate. This surface showed a Cassie impregnating wetting state and had a low water adhesion force of 7 μN, much lower than others. It also displayed good chemical stability, mechanical durability, and superior antipollution property. This multifunctional superhydrophobic surface has great potential for droplet transportation and self-cleaning applications.

Energy Loss for Droplets Bouncing Off Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Calvin Thenarianto et al.

Summary: A water droplet can rebound multiple times on superhydrophobic surfaces, and the energy loss during such rebounds depends on the ratio of rebound speed to initial impact speed. We conducted experiments on different superhydrophobic surfaces with droplets of various sizes and proposed scaling laws to explain the nonmonotonic relationship between the energy loss and impact speed. At low impact speeds, the energy loss is influenced by contact-line pinning and the surface wetting properties, while at high impact speeds, it is dominated by inertial-capillary effects.
