The impact of secondary channels on the wetting properties of interconnected hydrophobic nanopores

Goncalo Paulo et al.

Summary: Pores in nanoporous materials can be interconnected in different ways, affecting the overall hydrophobicity of the material. The length of secondary channels is a key parameter to tune the hydrophobicity: short channels make the main pore more hydrophilic, while long channels enhance its hydrophobicity, resulting in superhydrophobic textures. The spontaneous filling of secondary channels is explained by the formation of hydrogen bonds, which become less frequent with longer channels.

Turning Molecular Springs into Nano-Shock Absorbers: The Effect of Macroscopic Morphology and Crystal Size on the Dynamic Hysteresis of Water Intrusion-Extrusion into-from Hydrophobic Nanopores

Pawel Zajdel et al.

Summary: Controlling the pressure of liquid intrusion and extrusion in nanopores is crucial for various applications. In this study, we propose a new method of controlling these pressures by arranging the grains of the nanoporous material. Experimental results show a significant increase in the dynamic hysteresis, transforming the system into an efficient shock-absorber.

Subnanometer Topological Tuning of the Liquid Intrusion/Extrusion Characteristics of Hydrophobic Micropores

Yuriy G. Bushuev et al.

Summary: Intrusion/extrusion of liquids in/from lyophobic nanoporous systems plays a key role in various fields. This study demonstrates that secondary topological features significantly affect the intrusion/extrusion cycle. Tuning intrusion/extrusion pressures through subnanometric topological features provides a new strategy for designing hydrophobic micropores.

Effect of the Topology on Wetting and Drying of Hydrophobic Porous Materials

Yuriy G. Bushuev et al.

Summary: This article presents a new approach to studying the wetting and drying of hydrophobic porous materials by examining the effect of the topology of pure silica nanoparticles, nanotubes, and zeolites. The study shows that the hydrophobicity of materials can be controlled by changing the ratio of open to closed nanometer-sized lateral pores. The research also predicts the intrusion pressure of zeolites based on simulations and theoretical considerations, which can be useful for selecting potential materials for energy storage and dissipation.

Inflation Negative Compressibility during Intrusion-Extrusion of a Non-Wetting Liquid into a Flexible Nanoporous Framework

Pawel Zajdel et al.

Summary: A study discovered a significant negative compressibility effect when a non-wetting liquid penetrates a flexible porous structure, causing expansion in certain dimensions. Through high-pressure neutron scattering, intrusion-extrusion experiments, and DFT calculations, coefficients of negative compressibility exceeding previously reported values by over an order of magnitude were achieved.

Giant Negative Compressibility by Liquid Intrusion into Superhydrophobic Flexible Nanoporous Frameworks

Marco Tortora et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates exceptional negative linear compressibility (NLC) and negative volumetric compressibility (NVC) values can be achieved through nonwetting liquid intrusion in flexible porous media, particularly in the ZIF-8 metal-organic framework. The presence of liquid in the windows connecting cavities of ZIF-8 leads to volumetric expansion, paving the way for designing novel materials with exceptional NLC and NVC at reasonable pressures for a wide range of applications.

Liquid intrusion in and extrusion from non-wettable nanopores for technological applications

Alberto Giacomello et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent theoretical results on intrusion and extrusion of non-wetting liquids in and out of cavities of nanotextured surfaces and nanoporous materials. Nanoscale confinement allows these processes to occur under conditions different from bulk phase coexistence. Simulations can help shed light on the relation between pore morphology, chemical composition, and intrusion/extrusion thermodynamics and kinetics, while rare event techniques are necessary to study the collective dynamics of intrusion/extrusion processes.
